cheese board with pickles and bread/biscuits and maybe some mincepies.

BouncingTinsel · 15/12/2008 07:07

Maybe she is referring to the wine, Bucksfizz

J2O · 15/12/2008 11:05

this (and another thread) has inspired me to do a bit of baking, am liking the christmas pud cupcakes, BF-if you do make them in bun cases-let me know how they go! may make some for dp to take in to work, the single men are very appreciative

LoveBeingAMummyKissingSanta · 15/12/2008 11:26

Just meant the things you think of first and normally sweet...

sticksantaupyourchimney · 15/12/2008 13:09

Unless you are an ace confectionary cook who likes making cakes, tell him to go and buy something from M&S and get over himself. Does he work in the sort of company where the men want to prove they have obedient wives or something?

I made these chocolate mint Brownies last night - increased the quantities by half as my tray was bigger than the recipe said and it made loads and loads! was really simple and looks great. I did read a review that said they stuck crushed candy-canes on the top for a more xmassy look. Good luck, I think it's really nice to do this for your dh, he sounds like my dh who is also working all the hours God sends to keep us barely afloat.

HangingbaublesofBethlehem · 15/12/2008 13:20

ps. don't listen to the miserable lot - you ARE allowed to want to do nice things for the man you love. That's what a relationship is about.

wideratthehips · 15/12/2008 13:34

i'm flumoxed by the other thread....why would you not do something nice for your husband and collegues (sp) if he has asked you, sounds reasonable to me. everything doesn't have to be a hands on hips negotiation what have you done for me lately (god i wouldn't have a dhor any friends if this was my attitude) i thinks its nice to do things for other people....when did we stop being just nice and friendly????

now if he asked me to iron his shirts......

J2O · 15/12/2008 13:34

hanging baubles-those brownies look yummy! I want to eat everything that has been suggested, better get myself to the shop with a list.

wideratthehips · 15/12/2008 13:38

i'm going to make a big gingerbread cake with lemon icing to give to ds1 teacher so the staff can have some in the staffroom this week.....nice and christmassy i think. not to faffy and they can cut it up themselves

ChirpyGrinch · 15/12/2008 15:20

I make christmas puffs for DH's office, they insist on it now!
Basically puff pastry circles with a spoon of mincemeat and a small piece of marzipan, then you make like a pasty shape out of it, brush with egg, and bake it.

(found this thread from other one, and am with you on this.)

MadameCastafiore · 15/12/2008 15:21

Nigella does some festive gingery muffins that are scrummy and easy to make.

Personally I would tell him where the nearest Krispy Creme was and insist on a box brought home as well. (Actually I would be up all night baking but I like to be a bit cross about men asking for things when we have enough on our plates as it is!)

twinsetiscrapatflouncing · 15/12/2008 15:31

i used to make things for my dp to take into work it is called being in a relationship. He often comes in and tidies my classroom or helps with displays. He is also a dab hand with making the odd worksheet.

I always make home made mincemeat but of you want to jazz up shop bought just add fresh ingredients and a slug of brandy to make mincepies.

I make nigellas clementine cake very year it is fab.

Chocolate brownies go down well and are easy to make.

I like the idea of something gingerbready.

Yanda · 15/12/2008 15:46

Well this thread has inspired me to make something for DH to take into work for xmas eve. Maybe the Xmas pud cupcakes, yum!

I'm alittle at the accusation that your DH is ordering you to make these things or something. Is nobody allowed to do something nice without being accused of being taken advantage of or being a doormat? How is the notion that a woman shouldn't bake some cakes just because her DH asked her to any more forward thinking than that she should bake them because she is a woman? I didn't realise that the only options these days were be taken for granted or be a ball stomping bitch. How about being a person who is so appreciated for their cooking skills that their partner asks if they could bake something to take to work because they are proud of what she can do?

IwishIwasaStockingStuffer · 15/12/2008 15:51

Inspired by another thread where someones son made them at nursery (so I should be able to manage them!) I was going to make Baby Jesus cakes, not sure if my DP would take them into work though.

twinsetiscrapatflouncing · 15/12/2008 16:04

What are baby Jesus cakes I so need to make them

xfabba · 15/12/2008 16:06

I would point him in the direction of the nearest M&S foodhall personally ........ but nice of you to make something for them all.

IwishIwasaStockingStuffer · 15/12/2008 16:31

From looking at the picture they seem to be crushed up cornflakes with chocolate to make the hay, a paper bun case with the cornflake/chocolate in it, a jelly baby nestling on top covered with a little royal icing blanket!

twinsetiscrapatflouncing · 15/12/2008 16:37

I teach RE and some of my classes would pee themselves if I gave them a baby jesus cake. Can I have a link to the picture.

randomxmas · 15/12/2008 16:44

Nothing too heavy as it's xmas the following day - would take in something savoury - cheese straws, pretzels, crisps - blokes wont go for cakes

sticksantaupyourchimney · 15/12/2008 17:23

Yanda: well I got the impression from the OP's posts that she was a)busy and b) not a keen or confident baker, so it would be an imposition for her DH to demand she drop everything and bake just so he can prove to his colleagues that he has a Good Wifey or something.
OP, if you are Cakemaker of the Year or something and regularly enjoy baking for friends then that's fine, but nobody should feel that their genitals oblige them to do things that they don't like and are no good at just because someone else tells them to.

bramblebooks · 15/12/2008 18:01

I have just made a slab of peanut brittle to take to work - it was surprisingly easy for someone like me who doesn't have much success making sweet stuff.

nooka · 15/12/2008 18:45

If this was on AIBU then fair enough, but Bucksfizz seems to actually quite like the idea, so why should it be considered a problem? The best cakes I have ever had in a work context were made by a man (great tasting and fabulously decorated too).

I made a really fab gingerbread cake to take in to work, which is a nice less sweet (and quite forgiving) cake. Does require stem ginger to make it work though. Otherwise Christmas Logs are not that hard, you use a nice chocolate sponge recipe in a flat tin (the sort of tin you use for cookies). The key is to roll it up in a sugared tea towel whilst it is still warm and flexible. Then once it is cool, you unroll, spread with a delicious filling and roll up again. Easier than a normal round cake IME and good for more of a "celebratory statement" if that's what you are after.

I always bring something in to say thank you to my team at Christmas, especially those who have to be there over Christmas. Sometimes it has been made by my children - is that equally bad?

I can dig out recipes for the above if you like, and also for freezer biscuits (the easier biscuits in the world, as you don't have to use cookie cutters or anything, and you can make loads and freeze for another day).
