here

This is adapted from Nigella's recipe which she uses to make Christmas Tree decorations. She recommends putting pepper in to stop the dc's eating them but I am too soft to do that!

ChopsTheDuck · 11/12/2008 11:32

pepper! That is so mean!

Surely the whole point is that the dkids eat them.

I think I'm going to give that a go.

BellaKissedSanta · 11/12/2008 11:42

I agree, Chops.

Nasty Nigella

Swedish gingerbread

300g butter
5 dl sugar
1dl syryp
1tbsp ground ginger
2 tbsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp ground cloves
2 tsp ground cardamom
1 tbsp bicarbonate soda
2dl water
1.5 l flour

mix bytter, sygar and suryp. Add spices and bicarbonate. Add water and work in flour until it's a smooth dough. Wrap in clingfilm and let it rest in fridge for 24 hours.

roll out thinly, take out shapes and bake for apporx 5 minutes at gasmark 6.

Just made these and they are very easy and delish...yum yum

dinny · 11/12/2008 17:18

do you make your own icing or buy those tubes to decorate?

OP posts:
MamaHobgoblin · 11/12/2008 19:22

If you're wanting to hang them up, I'd make some icing using royal icing sugar rather than the usual plain icing sugar, because it sets hard, and quickly. I think the tubes will stay soft and smudge!

can you use black treacle if no golden syrup?

OP posts:
dinny · 12/12/2008 15:00

anyone??

OP posts:
theHoHoHouseofmirth · 12/12/2008 19:15

Don' thikn treacle is quite the same. Maple syrup miht work?

I wanted to ask this: if you make gingerbread bisuits to hange on tree etc does that then render them purely decorative? Surely they would go stale in the air?

dairymoo · 12/12/2008 19:25

Nigella's recipe uses honey, so if it's not too late, perhaps you could swap the golden syrup for honey instead?

starbear · 12/12/2008 20:01

golden syrup in this house. Icing. I made my first home made batch on Monday. (don't do this with kids it will drive you potty) It worked better than the ready made stuff.
1 egg white
1/2 teaspoon of lemon
125 gms icing sugar.

beat egg white until soft peaks form. gradually add the lemon juice and shifted icing sugar and beat until thick and creamy.

That's the recipe I used. I didn't have a piping bag and I wanted to have really thin lines and dots. So I put the icing sugar into a plastic bag. Squeezed into one corner then pricked with a needle. This is still a working in progress. DH and DS loved the lovely (messy) patterns I made and I was able to make dots for eyes, nose and mouth.

sassyfrassy, that sounds delicious. what does dl stand for??

theHoHoHouseofmirth · 12/12/2008 21:09

Decilitres I think.

Anyone help with my query about staleness, please?
