Using labels to address Christmas cards - it's just wrong

Forgive me if this has been discussed already.

I don't know why it irritates me so much, perhaps it is because it makes me feel it is like receiving junk mail, except from distant relatives.

Or maybe it is the inference that people who do this have so many friends / such a fulfilled life, that they simply don't have the time to write the envelopes.

Whatever the reason, anyone who sends a Christmas card to me, and uses an address label on the envelope, receives a mental blackmark against them.

Is it just me?

It wouldn;t bother me for the envelope.

Would do if preprinted inside.

zazen · 10/12/2008 23:05

I kindof agree!
We make all out winter cards and draw original pictures on each one and then write inside with sparkling pens and send in a beautiful envelope and hand write addresses.
DD helps with a lot of it (especially the sparkly bits) and we have a stamp for the envelope with ink as well, which is always fun for her.
It's quite a process!!

I get envelopes with pre printed labels and TBH I'm half blimey Am I on their mailing list now? and the other half of me is just amazed that anyone can master the mail merge for labels!!

ceciliaaherne · 10/12/2008 23:06

I think it's just you .

I agree with Hulababy. It makes sense and I wish I had it all set up.

It would be worse if they didn't send one.

Printed address label, pefectly fine sensible.

Printed label saying love from not.

JingleBennysAndJooniper · 10/12/2008 23:09

getting labels printed off was tip of the day on MN not so long back.........

So you must not criticise or Justine will appear!

dearprudence · 10/12/2008 23:11

Not bothered about the labels but I don't like the cards that are just signed with their names, and don't say 'To' anyone. So impersonal.

Labels have made it so much easier for me. I've used them for dh's 50th, dd's christening, Christmas for a few years. There's nothing wrong with trying to save a bit of time, especially at this time of year.

VanessaParody · 10/12/2008 23:18

My sisters Christmas card arrived with her perfect hand writing in black ink and not a mark, crease or drop of rain on it.

So I wrote mine in my bestest writing in ink. And it pissed with rain for days after I'd posted them. They will be in the post office bin now, soggy and useless.

designergirl · 10/12/2008 23:32

You will hate me then, I've just had a stamp made up with "love from...all our names" I just hate writing the same thing over and over again. Then, having established who the card is from, I can then write a personal note/message in each one.

hobnob · 10/12/2008 23:40

Well I had some very helpful advice from someone on MN recently about how to do this, so I hope none of my recipients feel it's a bad thing! It will save literally hours and then we can write more inside. Besides, I have tried to make it a bit personal by putting people's nicknames on the labels where appropriate, and including their pets if they regard them as part of the family.

ChristmasFairySantAsSLut · 10/12/2008 23:44

...I tend to print out my own adress on labels, because I like to put my addi on the envelope...call it a german habit....I mean I still write out the card and the recipient...just try to safe a 1/3 of the "work"

ChristmasFairySantAsSLut · 10/12/2008 23:46

just read the other messages...so, how many cards do people send out....because with all of the Kids cards for school we get through well over 100 cards....so, a lot of them will only have the love from, r whatever in them....especially those of people I see , if it is people I don't see often, then I tend to write more....

EightiesChick · 11/12/2008 00:43

I print address labels, though I wouldn't use them inside the actual cards. Why is it a mark of sincerity to write out people's addresses over and over? Saving time on that gives you more chance to write something personal in the cards themselves. No point in making a martyr of yourself over donkey work.

idlingabout · 11/12/2008 10:25

We use labels as they act as a 'list' so we don't forget anyone. I have also found that they are invaluable if the cards come with coloured envelopes (especially red or silver)as hand-writing is not very visible on these.

TheYearOfTheCat · 12/12/2008 10:51

It must just be me then

I love receiving handwritten envelopes through the letter-box. It looks so much nicer, and I enjoy recognising people's handwriting, which gives me a sense of anticipation as I open their card. [must really get a life emoticon]
