and when I sit down to wrap them up I realise I don't really want to part with them.

i never buy myself anything nice. Nothing 'treat' like. The you see these lovely things, and say 'ooh thats lovely, i'll get that for so an so'

no bugger buys 'things' for me tho!!

weepootle · 10/12/2008 13:49

Me too, and I end up going out and buying another - it's usually when buying things for other little girls I think, dd would love that too.

My MIL saw some lovely mugs I'd bought from T K Maxx and was working up to wrapping up for the DCs teachers (with some lovely coffee and chocolates) and she asked if she could take two of them (as gifts for friends) and give me the money with which to replace them during the week. I broke out in a cold sweat at the thought.

I seem to have become this horribly acquisitive person.

The other day in M&S I bought hot pink leather gloves for one SIL and moss green leather gloves for the other SIL and then at home I tried them on and decided I wanted desperately to keep both pairs.

I need help.

lol!!! That makes me laugh soooooooo much!!!

I fell in love with the hot pink leather gloves too! But i managed to refrain myself and left them in the shop lol!!

I know what you mean though, i never treat myself to all these gorgeous girly things that are around at the moment!!!

Keep them all!!

cheeseandsproutssarnie · 10/12/2008 14:45

this is why i buy rubbish!

harpomarx · 10/12/2008 14:47

I often buy things I love for my mum and dad... they usually give them back to me several years later when they have a clear out. After 38 years, I clearly haven't quite cracked their taste.

matildax · 10/12/2008 15:07

oh god i do this all the time!!!
last year i bought a friend a lovely hat and striped scarf with matching gloves from accesorize. really pretty they were.
when it came to wrap them, i kept them after trying them on, and wrapped up some thorntons chocs for her instead!! she was happy enough. oh and yes she did admire my new gloves, hat and scarf

I'm glad I'm not alone.

I also bought a lovely photo album with thick parchment pages, waxed interleaves and a packet of proper photo corners. It's heavenly and I'm struggling to wrap it up and label it for Aunt T.

swedes just keep it. thorntons choccies really are just as good

I have a friend who does all her Christmas shopping on one Thorntons chocolate order online. It's a bit joyless isn't it?

There was an article in yesterday's Times2 (by Richard Morrisson) that said it really is presumptious to impose your taste on someone else at Christmas. The phrase he dreads most whilst opening the gift of a book is 'I absolutely loved it and know you will too'. I shuddered really as I am imposing my taste on everybody. Everything I buy is really for me, well not exactly I buy something I think they will like but I must like it too. I couldn't buy something I thought was awful but should I?

Do you buy gifts that you think the other person will like but are really shit? I can't even do that for my 3 year old.

not at all swedes. i buy stuff i know they will like, it just so happens that i like it too!!
i have impeccable taste, so i like to think of it as passing that on to them, as well as a gorgeous gift......... the poor unfortunate tasteless souls!!

i don't really just give thorntons chocs, i would more than likely eat them, and have to buy something else again!
xx

Vouchers have always scared me.... but I'm beginning to see their merit.
