Dug out the old Xmas CD today - I love Mary's Boy Child by Boney M, classic . Oh, and Merry Christmas (War is Over) by John Lennon, always makes me a bit tearful though...

Carols get me all nostalgic too, I was in the choir at Primary School and loved Oh Come All Ye Faithful cos we got to do the extra up and downy bits in the chorus (sorry, it's been a long time since I did anything musical and I can't remember the technical term.

AND

'Last Christmas, I gave you my heart, but the very next day, you gave it away...'

Awwwwww, takes me back to my youth.

totalmisfit · 09/12/2008 21:33

Fairy Tale of New York is the only one i like, besides proper carols sung by proper singers.

callmeovercautious · 09/12/2008 21:35

Jingle bells - DD knows all the words

Ewe · 09/12/2008 21:35

Fairytale of New York for me definitely. I always go with my Dad to see The Pogues at Christmas and for me it doesn't feel like Christmas until FoNY has been sung in a loud drunken stylee by me and my Pa!

nannyeggnogg · 09/12/2008 21:36

yes yes Christmas Wrapping too, and The Power of Love by Frankie.

tissy · 09/12/2008 22:36

slayerette, I don't know who wrote the tunes. The one I sang in the school choir is the right one!

Holst! That's the right one, just had a listen on iTunes

AaliyahsFirstXmas · 09/12/2008 22:40

Hmmmm Fairytale of new york and the one where he screams "its christmas"

elkiedee · 09/12/2008 22:58

Fairytale of New York

I also really like Jona Lewie's Stop the Cavalry, also a good anti war song from the early 80s

slayerette · 10/12/2008 17:04

Ah - tissy - I like the other version better! I always sang the Holst at school and only discovered the other version when older and I love it (when sung by a really good choir - not the Sarah Brightman version I've found on Youtube!)

slayerette · 10/12/2008 17:09

This is a gorgeous version of it - don't worry, not Sarah Brightman!

mellyonion · 10/12/2008 17:15

I love the Elton John step into Xmas,

tissy · 10/12/2008 17:38

ok, slayerette, I'll grant you that is an ok version, and Hexham Abbey is very nice, but I can't stand La Garrett, she makes me want to turn off immediately!!

lovecat · 10/12/2008 17:49

mellyonion, I too have a soft spot for 'Proper Crimbo'...

Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses is my all time fave, but the following are also fab:

The Power of Love
Last Christmas
Sleigh Ride (the Ronettes version)
It's the most wonderful time of the year
Fairytale of New York
Santa Baby (Eartha Kitt)

and Oh Holy Night - but as sung by the lady at our church every year in our candlelit midnight mass - beautiful

Swedes · 10/12/2008 23:17

The Pogues with Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale of New York

EightiesChick · 11/12/2008 08:12

My two faves:
Stop the Cavalry by Jona Lewie
Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses

also like:
Driving Home For Christmas by Chris Rea
The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole ('Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...) has to be this version as no-one else sings it so crisply and clearly
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - preferably Sinatra but there are other nice versions

I have quite a few 'themed' Christmas CDs, ie Easy Christmas, Jazz Christmas, Country Christmas etc, which are good for some variety. Picked most of them up at discount prices at Woolies a few years ago. Come to think, they will probably all be on the shelves again at knock-down prices today.
