The reason being the 21st is my tesco delivery spot!!

yes. i went to the butcher today to ask how much his were, and delivery times, and he was getting them in on 20th for collection any time before 24th.

are you me? i've just ordered mine on tescos for 21st...

rubyslippersisappearinginpanto · 09/12/2008 20:47

no - freeze it

compo · 09/12/2008 20:59

oh 2 conflicting opinions!!
well if I was going to freeze it I may as well save my money and buy a frozen one!!

it is a bit weird, that tesco only deliver fresh turkeys on 20th 21st and 22nd. nothing on 23rd so i would presume you would be fine for a freshy on 21st

rubyslippersisappearinginpanto · 09/12/2008 21:05

I always buy chickens from a butcher and the lables say use on the day or freeze

so i do

lovelydear · 10/12/2008 14:04

but the frozen ones take 3 days to defrost... i chose the 'finest' one - 48 quid! i was going to buy one from the butcher but it would have been £65 and smaller.

fatjac · 10/12/2008 15:22

The turkeys from the butcher will be fresher to start with I would imagine. The Tesco ones are likely to have been in a refridgerated warehouse for some time prior to being delivered.

Just be careful

Last year I bought one on the fiday after xmas to have new years day. That was a fresh one reduced in Tesco. Hoping to do the same this year as well.

BexieID · 10/12/2008 15:52

friday even

lovelydear · 10/12/2008 19:19

hmm i'm concerned now fatjac. good point about it having been stored by tescos first. i could just go and buy a frozen one now i guess.

spicemonster · 10/12/2008 19:21

Surely if tesco are going to deliver you a fresh turkey by the 21st, they are going to be expecting you to eat it on xmas day? They'd be in a whole heap of trouble if they all went off before xmas so I'd say that'd be fine

harpomarx · 10/12/2008 19:27

I'm like Ruby - I only eat chicken on the day I have bought it (or the next day at the most). And I have had chicken from the supermarket that smells off before the best before date. So, I would be worried about the turkey... a day or two I would be fine with but 5 days....

lovelydear · 10/12/2008 19:49

i actually rang tesco, and though all i got was the opinion of the person who answered the phone, he said the same as you, spicemonster. for what it's worth.

MrsMattie · 10/12/2008 19:50

I wouldnt risk it, no.

compo · 15/12/2008 19:08

I went for frozen in the end, £15 Bernard Matthews for 6-8 people

surely it would have a use by date on it?
