Slightly weird food-related present plan - inspiration please!

We are spending Christmas this year with my parents and siblings. (Do so every other year, usually have a lovely time.) We don't do big presents, try to keep it minimalist but thoughtful and have a price limit of 10 pounds per person.

Nobody really needs anything, and doing something special with 10 pounds takes quite a bit of effort and inspiration, so this is the best plan I've come up with so far (please don't say it's awful because I think I'd better go with it now - also I genuinely think it will go down quite well):

Everyone gets a box (open, bit like a hamper) full of nicely wrapped packages. The boxes aren't allocated in advance to a specific person, so there is bit of a lucky-dip element. The contents of the packages are the ingredients for a recipe (will think of some way round the problem of perishables), the recipe itself is also included, obviously, and each person then has to gets to cook their thing for everyone at some point over the next few days, perhaps with another person of their choice. That way, we all get to eat nice treats, parents don't have to do all the catering, and varying combinations of people get to have companionable kitchen chats.

So, there are five adults to do this for, and I was thinking along the lines of two savoury meals, two sweet things and some kind of boozy Christmas drink. Would like it to be simple but a bit special, and probably vegetarian. Does anyone not think this is totally weird and want to suggest any recipes?

Thanks very much

(Am mostly-lurker but have name-changed anyway just in case recipients are stalking me.)

Sounds great and fun, woudln't work with my family but we only do Christmas day together.

Ooh that sounds a lovely idea.

Veggie lasagne with a bottle of red wine to put some in the sauce and drink the rest?

Veggie curry and pilau rice?

Nigella's chocolate guinness cake, which is, as far as I'm concerned, the king of cakes.

Sounds great fun. There was a thread recently about "meal" hampers which had some good suggestions.

One I remember was risotto - so it would have rice, just bouillon powder, porcini mushrooms, wine, parmesan cheese, garlic...

One sweet one was pancakes.

Hang on, I'll see if I can find the thread.

Here it is! lots of lovely ideas

Sophiechen · 08/12/2008 19:13

Ooh, thanks for ideas and great link.

Is all a bit of a gamble because I won't have time to do a test-run for each thing, but I suppose we'll have a good laugh if something turns out to be a disaster.

Does anybody know a good variation on the mulled wine theme?

Wow, love the risotto idea.

I'm doing a similar thing. Homemade hampers, some containing recipe mixes. For one member of my family, I'm putting together a chocolate pudding mix. Can't get around the fact it needs them to add milk, egg and butter, but I figure we mostly have these things around. All the plush ingredients are in the mix. If you like, I'll write the recipe. I've tried this many times (under the pretence of 'testing' it obviously), and is delicious. Sticky, rich and hugely chocolatey

it may need another 'test' soon...

Just bumping this in case there are any inspired morning people out there.

CakeForBreakfast, I'd love the pudding recipe if you have a chance to type it out. Thanks!

Fab idea. Could you get round the 'fresh food' thing by wrapping ingredients and putting them in the fridge, colour coded, then you put a 'ticket' in the hamper, so the recipient knows what they have to go and find?

Laugs · 10/12/2008 12:08

Sounds like a lovely idea. DP and I once played Ready Steady Cook together ie bought each other a bag of random ingredients and had to cook for one another. It was great fun!

If someone isn't really into cooking, you could get them this www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2921/mulled-wine-kit

Okay, Sticky chocolate pudding recipe follows:

These instructions are for the recipient. To assemble the actual present, what I'm doing is putting all the sponge ingredients in (pretty) layers in a kilner jar, the sauce ingredients all together in a little bag seperately with these instructions and putting the lot in the pudding basin it will be cooked in, so its foolproof.

Need a 1.7pt capacity pudding basin or (equivalent).
Serves 4

SPONGE MIX:
75 S.R flour
2 Tablespoon cocoa powder
25 ground almonds
50 plain chocolate drops
100g caster sugar
90ml milk (perishable, hopefully supplied by recipient)
25g melted butter (hopefully supplied by recipient)
1 small egg (perishable, hopefully supplied by recipient)

SAUCE MIX:
30g muscovado sugar
2 tsp cocoa powder
100g milk chocolate chips

  1. Empty the sponge mix ingredients into the pudding basin, mix them up a bit with a spoon
  1. Add the milk, butter and egg. Mix until just combined
  1. Empty the sauce mix ingredients into a seperate bowl. Add 100ml of boiling water from the kettle. Mix a little, it doesn't need to be completely smooth and melted
  1. Scrape the sauce mix on top of the sponge
  1. Bung in oven at 180C (160 if fan assist) for 35 to 40mins. The sauce will have soaked to the bottom and the sponge risenlightly

eat with lots of cream!

Don't forget to let your parents know the plans for the boxes so that they haven't been out and bought all the food and menu planned for the days that you are there.

Thanks a lot for the ideas, everyone, and the recipe, CakeforBreakfast. Will report back on how it all works out.
