Talk to me about stocking fillers ...

NotQuiteCockney · 08/12/2008 14:01

I'm thinking about hitting Sainsbury's or similar today. I have to do stockings for:

  • me (ish - DH will get me stuff)
  • DH
  • DS1 (7)
  • DS2 (4)
  • FIL
  • MIL

I've got some little puzzle/colouring books coming for the DSes. I want to not buy a giant pile'o'crap from Hawkins this year. So what do I use? I think I have some dinosaur stuff, I'll get some food bits ... maybe a magazine each?

Those little packets of tissues with patterns on them.

Stickers

Felt Tips

Glitter

Coloured Pipe Cleaners

Sudoku Books for the grown-ups

Ummmm....

blametheparents · 08/12/2008 14:06

I'm getting DS and DD a variety pack of cereal each for their stockings. They always nag at me to buy them and I never do, so they can have them as a Xmas treat!
Also got them one of those magic flannels each that is really tiny and then becomes full size in water, they were from the Disney Store.
Top trumps cards?
Gloves
Joke book for your 7yo. DS (also 7) recently got one from M&S and he loves it, can be a bit painful for the grown ups though.
I've also got DS a junior sudoku book from M&S and DD a couple of those First Reader books from M&S (can you tell I went there on 20% day!)

The little bars of Hotel Chocolat chocolate for the adults.
Miniature bottles of Baileys, or similar.
Shortbread.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 08/12/2008 14:07

Essentials: an orange, some chocolate (coins, quality street), pants, socks, toothbrush, book/dvd (to entertain the children), practical joke/whoopy cushion.

MamaG · 08/12/2008 14:07

I'm getting mostly edible stuff for mine this year. I'm sick of emptying out the toybox and binning/ giving away a load of crappy little bits

MamaG · 08/12/2008 14:07

oh God that reminds me, I must get DS a whoopee cushion. Its all he's asked for ! Can't bloody find one locally and don't really want to pay £5 postage on a 75p gift!

snice · 08/12/2008 14:09

Wilkinsons usually have whoopee cushions

NotQuiteCockney · 08/12/2008 14:13

Ok, lots of great ideas. I will hit the appropriate stores.

Yes, I normally do Hawkins or similar, only it all sucks, and doesn't even make it to the toy box, I find a bag of it under my bed a month later .

Will try Woolies now, Boots, maybe M+S too.

saltire · 08/12/2008 14:56

Boots have
Dr Who bath fizzers (£2.00), Dalek (or it could be cuberman) bubble bath for £5.00. Choc coijnc, magic flannels etc, in their 3 for 2 offer

saltire · 08/12/2008 14:56

They also have blow-football,w hich I got for Ds1's stocking.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 08/12/2008 15:04

cheap children's creative stuff here

frostyfingers · 08/12/2008 16:01

I've bought a soft toy, grow your own venus fly trap plant (!), socks, choccy money, tube of maltesers, bath fiz stuff, small joke book, and a plastic sign saying "no trespassers" from the local building store! For the older boys I've included some stinky lynx and some hair gel! Funny shaped erasers are quite popular too - bought rude pencil sharpener where you put pencil up dog's bum to sharpen it (sad, but 13yo boys will lurve it!) Know what you mean about lots of tacky stuff though!

HappyMummyOfOne · 08/12/2008 16:13

MamaG, use "POUND" as a promotional code on Hawkins Bazaar and postage is £1 - no mim order. £1.75 is not bad for an online item with delivery.

mummychristmas · 08/12/2008 16:16

i am going to 'fun learning' for some of mine for ds7.

sophy · 08/12/2008 17:54

Mine are getting

New pants or socks
Bubble Bath (organic)
Club Penguin token
New Pens or colouring pencils
Packet of seeds
Crazy Putty
A decoration for the tree (fair trade)
2 2nd hand paperbacks (charity shop)
Ticket to panto
Clementine
Chocolate santa

Think I have done quite well for non-crap

sophy · 08/12/2008 17:56

frostyfingers where do you get the venus fly trap thing from? Liking that idea a lot

ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 08/12/2008 18:01

I am a bit stuck on DS - he is 7. Had a load of stuff last year that never even got opened.

So far this year I have a mini box of Lego, Blow football and a couple of cute magnets - he has a magnetic board in his bedroom.

He has torches. He has thousands of pens and pencils and the like.

Oh - also have a Ben 10 mini jigsaw.

onthepier · 08/12/2008 21:27

We've got mini playmobil + lego sets, together with bits and pieces from the "Pound Shop"!

MamaG · 09/12/2008 12:23

Thanks a lot happymum - I got all the kids stocking fillers now

Magnetic Frogs & Ladybirds 2 £0.50 £0.50
Puzzle Eraser 1 £0.75 £0.75
Whoopee Cushion 1 £0.75 £0.75
Stretchy Smiley Man 2 £0.25 £0.25
Polystyrene Glider 1 £0.35 £0.35
Mini Springy

Wildebeest · 09/12/2008 12:24

This year i have got sweets and am doing annuals and promises. ( as www suggested)

Wildebeest · 09/12/2008 12:25

We view stockings as like an impediment to them waking us up, so anything sweets or craze related( ie Star wars) is good.

NO PLASTIC SHIT

DesperateHousewifeToo · 09/12/2008 14:27

Mamag did you find a whooppee cushion?

There are loads in my local toy shop for 75p. Happy to get one this week and post to you.

CAT me if you want, with your address.

MamaG · 10/12/2008 12:32

Thanks Des, but happymum gave me a code for £1 delivery on hawkins bazaar so I ordered some bits from there, inc whoopee cushion
