laptop table - box like thingy with a flap that comes up?

Ages ago I saw a wooden cube, which was plain and would look quite funky as a sofa/side table, that had a flap that lifted out/up so you could sit on the sofa and use laptop without hunching over.

I'm really stuck for a gift for DH (can you tell?) and he often uses laptop to work on sofa.

Does anyone know what they are called/where I would get one? (or why?)

you will hate this

they are not really meant for laptops but for eating on teh sofa

hang on and i will rummage

mogs0 · 04/12/2008 19:28

I think Ikea used to sell them.

whomovedmychocolate · 04/12/2008 19:32

You mean a writing slant?

twinklytoes · 04/12/2008 19:48

ikea

MarmadukeScarlet · 04/12/2008 19:49

No, not a writing slant or a food table either.

It was a box the size of a sofa end table, lower than the arm of sofa but high enough to comfortably rest your cuppa on.

The top flipped up and over, so you could put your laptop on it.

I'm sure I saw it in JLewis around £100, but I could of course be imagining that

Pretty please wise mumsnetters, tell me what it is...

Yes, it was John Lewis - I saw it too & posted on here that I liked it & got slated for my lack of taste.....

For reasons which now escape me, I ended up photoshopping a Yorkshire terrier into the picture ....

MrsBadger · 05/12/2008 09:11

there must be lots out there

like this

aha

they migth be known as supper tables

thus

MarmadukeScarlet · 05/12/2008 11:31

Rusy, that is the thing. It is a bit more square and 'office like' than I remembered it - wouldn't want the dog though .

Mrs Badger, I never knew such things existed am that anyone would spend so much money when a tray will do!

Thank you both very much for your links.

Yes, we have it, and it works really well.

Can't find it online, but it is on page 54 of their current Home catalogue as the Prague laptop box, 81627112 175 quid

MarmadukeScarlet · 05/12/2008 11:48

Thank you, dibbler. Looks OK in your sitting room? Not to industrial?

we have a 'dave' from ikea, he doesnt take up much room

cmotdibbler · 05/12/2008 12:05

It looks fine, and the great thing is that everything is totally hidden away from sticky fingers. The top is a good side table too.

I think it would blend in well with your room

MrsBadger · 05/12/2008 12:56

I knwo it is a glitch but rofl at '81627112 175 quid'

I knew JL could be expensive but really!

MarmadukeScarlet · 08/12/2008 12:34

Nipped up to Bluewater in my 2 hours of child-free time today, especially to get one. I had to buy the display one as they are no longer stocking them - at least it was undamaged and only £87! He can still return it within 28 days if he dislikes it. So, result I think.

Apart from...didn't come with a box or info etc, so dibbler if you return...

The metal bars are for resting laptop on when box is closed, is that right? You put the cables down the half wall thingy and under the 'mousehole' I can see that BUT on the side flap that folds down there is a bizarre footrest looking thing which is near the top when it is closed - is this for the cables to go under so that when it is closed the plugs are suspended from this?

Many TIA!

Thats right. Although we don't bother with that as its easier to just curl the cable up and take it out with the laptop. If using a printer in the box it's different.

You had a result on the price - DH said that he thought that they had been reduced last time he was in JL.

MarmadukeScarlet · 08/12/2008 12:47

Excellent. A very speedy response service!

Won't be using a priner in there as they are all upstairs in the study.

This is mostly when DH needs to work unsocial hours making and receiving phonecalls (many clients in USA and Asia Pac/Australia) the study is right next to DS' bedroom - he is the lightest sleeper in the whole world and a bugger to get back off.

I am LOL at the expression on my DH's face when he opens, what seems to be, a wooden box!

I was going to say that you wouldn't want to work at it all the time - we use it for doing a bit of work in the evening, or for game playing whilst watching TV.

Maybe get him a couple of little accessories to put inside - a wireless mouse, esp the new Microsoft multi surface one would be cool

MarmadukeScarlet · 08/12/2008 16:32

That is a great idea, thank you.

I also need to put an extension lead in there as sofa is miles away from wall, I know his laptop cable won't reach the plug - hence his usual hunched against the wall position for late night emails/calls!
