Christmas smells!

I have recently been on holiday and stayed in a fabulous hotel where every room constantly smelt of a really deep, woody chestnutty sort of smell.

It was divine.

Anybody know how I can recreate this at home?!?!?!?

I have never used any of those plug-in kind of air freshener things. Do they do Christmas ones?

Particulary keen to do this as we are having an artificial tree this year.

Hmm I'm not keen on those plug in air freshener things, any kind of air freshener, so packed with chemical nasties. Buy some cinammon sticks and some cloves from the supermarket and put a couple sticks with a handful of cloves on a baking sheet in the oven with the heat on low, you'll get a lovely Christmassy smell with no chemicals.

Ooooo.... that sounds pretty good. Would be keen any sort of natural ideas. Would definitely like to avoid the chemical thing.

Glad you pointed that out actually?

What if I was using the oven though? Is there some kind of pot pourri or something that will give off a chestnutty smell?

hm...not sure about that certain smell, however, we always put German Gingerbread (you can this in Lidl in big boxes) onto our tree, which gives the whole room a lovely scent of christmas spices....also, I think cinnamon sticks on the tree cna also give off a lovely scent.

The Gingerbread I mean are quite big, and they are shaped like Pretzels , Hearts and Stars, with a hole in them, so, great for hanging into the trea!

Also, Ikea may also do Gingerbread for trees...

There are some really nice pot pourris you can buy, but you can make your own as well. Again using some cinammon sticks, cloves, maybe some nice dried flowers for appearance. I sometimes add dried orance slices too; slice an orange quite thickly, say 1cm thick slices. Place them on a baking tray in the oven on very low and let them kind of dry out in the oven. I then top up the scent with some orange essential oil or something like that.

HeadFairy · 30/11/2008 16:30

Neals yard do some really Christmassy smelling essential oils, you could buy a couple and mix them, something like Bergamot, cinnamon, cloves and orange perhaps. If you've got one near you go and have a sniff. Then you can make your own mixture and put it in an oil burner.

I just got some Tesco pot pourri the other day - it was called "Autumn spice" - very nutty and cinnamony...

Pintail candles do really lovely scents, here.

I have sold them successfully in my High St shop for years, thay are the best imo. I use them a lot at home, cinnamon and orange is lovely.

Flamesparrow · 01/12/2008 21:16

I thought this was some sort of announcement like "Easter stinks" etc...

ChristmasFairySantAsSLut · 01/12/2008 21:38

honestly...gingerbread on the tree looks lovely and smells even better...

sparklytinselbella · 01/12/2008 21:42

callmeovercautious · 01/12/2008 21:46

You used to be able to buy some lovely candles from Sainsburys they came in Pine and christmas barries, you can get similar elsewhere. I miss those I will have a look at Jellycats link

SnowMuchToBits · 01/12/2008 21:48

And me, Flamesparrow!

idobelieveinsanta · 01/12/2008 21:49

Whatever you don't buy the Glade ( i think) 'mulled wine' air freshner..it is the most rank thing i have ever smelt..i'd rather smell a dirty nappy.

I am addcited to the febreeze spray air freshner-however not christmasy.....

a christmas smell to me would be the smell from fake snow that you spray on windows....(Childhood memories).

Just bought christmas pot pourri from M&S..not opened it yet so don't know the smell...but it looks nice.

GooberKingWenceslas · 01/12/2008 21:50

M&S have a christmas pot pourri with cinnamon sticks, orange and ....stuff , £3 a bag, also 3 for 2 AND they are having another 20% off day on Thursday.
Tis lovely, also very pretty.
