Any ideas for a rather awkward 5 year old. I know there was a similar thread recently but unfortunately didn't help!

How much money?

BiancaCastafiore · 29/11/2008 22:41

My 5 year old boy wants anything Lego (construction sets or Bionicles) anything Star Wars or anything with dinosaurs on
HTH

Looking for presents in the region of £15-£50. He has no idea of what he would like bar an Indiana dressing up costume (have already bought that -phew ) He talks about Ben 10 figures and Dr Who figures but am loathed to buy them if there is an alternative. He's not really bothered about them it must be said.

Lego is always a good one for boys and girls.

Othersideofthechannel · 30/11/2008 10:46

Awkward in what way?

Marne · 30/11/2008 11:04

Lego
Playmobil
Book

Flamesparrow · 30/11/2008 11:05

Magnetix is another good one (less good if he has younger siblings). All of DD's male friends (and DD) want Ben 10.

Flamesparrow · 30/11/2008 11:05

Oh, just seen you don't want Ben 10.

wideratthehips · 30/11/2008 13:27

indiana lego?

walle laptop

batmobile

ds1 wants something dr whoish..hes never seen the blooming thing! but ben 10 is a big hit and actually quite bareable

my son has for the first time had a look at an argos catalogue and has suggested a few things he would like...very helpful!

SquiffyHock · 30/11/2008 13:31

I'm with you on avoiding Ben 10. Playmobil is brilliant and they will play with it for years. Does he like model making - have bought DS some Polydrons which I know he loves at school. (would link but the website I bought from is down at the moment - Amazon have some)

theultimatethreadkiller · 30/11/2008 13:36

Lego?

Colditz · 30/11/2008 13:40

lego. K'nex (barred in this house). I have bought ds1 a metal detector, I will let you know how that goes down.

Niecie · 30/11/2008 13:47

Lego
Playmobil
Board games - Operation, Kerplunk etc
DVD
Books

joshad · 30/11/2008 14:46

Thanks for all your suggestions. Yep, I'm plumping for Lego. Have just been into Lego shop and seen a couple of sets he would like. He has some already as does his older brother. He's only recently got into it. Will buy DVD and books.
When I say awkward, Othersideofthechannel I mean he doesn't show much interest in many toys really. He says he likes certain things, like Ben 10 but when he gets them simply doesn't play with them. Perhaps that's true of all kids.
Maybe I'm being too harsh on myself, and trying to come up with something new and exciting. I have this reputation of getting people unusual but good gifts you see and it's hard to stop doing that now I have kids!
Magnetix, Operation and countless other board games he's got. But thank you for suggesting these.
A metal detector, mmm a possibility. Older brother had one.
Thanks Squiffyhock for suggestion of Polydrons. Will look up on Amazon.

oohhhh did his older brother use it?/ Did he like it?

All ds1's friends are talking about wii and ds lite etc but my budget just will not run to that.

joshad · 30/11/2008 15:11

Yes, loved it when he first got it.

I know what you mean about finding things they actually play with! If we had a crystal ball and knew what'd be a huge hit I'd happily spend that bit more for it.

We're going for all things "Ben 10ish" here as I know ds will LOVE that and I've been sensible mummy for the past 5 years and got all the sensible bikes/scooter/lego etc things. This time I'm going for exactly waht he wants! And ds really does play with figures a lot.

I assume you have a fold up scooter? Light sabre? Alarm clock? Watch? Magazine subscription? Football goals?

joshad · 30/11/2008 15:37

Tassisssss, yes, ah no a possibility (brother has one so they could have battles - er maybe not such a great idea!) yes, yes, possible and yes.

tassisssss · 30/11/2008 15:43

excellent - light sabre - there you go! I feel it's important to have one each!

Reckon this is the problem with same sex siblings, there's nothing the younger one wants/needs! I have 2 wee girls after my 5 year old boy. I think my strategy is going to be to get the girls joint things, would that be an option?

according to my SIL (with 6 year old son) the Ben 10 voice changer is excellent and great play value.

SquiffyHock · 30/11/2008 15:55

tassisssss - I bought mine a kitchen jointly last year and it worked so well that this year I have got them a till, money and some groceries jointly. It's nice to give them toys together to avoid squabbles.

As for finding things that they play with, it's getting boring buying Playmobil in my house (actually that's a lie as I love it!!) but DS plays with it so much. He's still a bit small (4.6) for all but Lego blocks. We are going with the trainset this year! I feel guily as DD has a £12 pram but I figure while they are not bothered by value then I shouldn't be.

tassisssss · 30/11/2008 16:01

Squiffy, I so agree about sharing and about them having no clue about value. My poor third child is (hopefully) getting a sound and light cot thingy that projects onto the ceiling that cost me £2 in a charity shop!! I say hopefully as we've not actually tried it with batteries in yet, really hope it works. She's 6 months old and we're drowning in baby clothes and toys so I've pretty much banned my family from getting more. Consequently, the poor lamb is getting a wooden height chart and one of those fabric wallhangings for dates and months which are clearly for the whole family, but I figure that loads of what was bought for my firstborn has been for the whole family...
