So who else is getting ridiculously oversentimental about school nativity play?

DS1 is going to be a cow, and his one line in the play is about how the baby Jesus is going to be our saviour. We were having a talk about this last night and I was trying to inspire him to put a bit of enthusiasm into his speech by saying, "just imagine how amazing it would be if you're just an ordinary cow, to have the baby Jesus born in your barn, blah blah", I found myself welling up!! I shall probably be in floods on the actual night!!

Why do people get all misty about it though? Does it remind you of when you were in these things as a child?
It reminds me - and as I hated being in any sort of performance it doesn't make me feel very sentimental! mind you we had horrid teachers who only cared about how good it looked for the school and were quite nasty to us about our singing etc

We had a carol service every year in junior school, and I always got solo parts because I could sing in tune - but the day we were in a rehearsal and the teacher snapped at this other child, 'You're no good, get off' and replaced her with me, has stuck in my mind
What a bitch.

I'm not sure I understand what it's all about really. Ds says it's all very embarrassing

piscesmoon · 29/11/2008 12:23

It is all do do with the innocence of the DCs, you either feel it or you don't-I can't really explain it.

Pretty sure i'll cry, I normally do at these events.

Im annoyed I didn't get to make her costume, the school already has them and mine would have been so much better. That's unreasonable yes?

I WANTED TO MAKE IT!!!!

james79 · 29/11/2008 14:40

When i taught Reception i would always well up. The best year was when i asked the children if how they'd like the parts allocated-they decided that picking names out of a hat would be fairest except that there was not one girl who wanted to be Mary! I had to coax one to forgo the Camel to take up the role! I had such a lump in my throat when the three kings walked up the church aisle with very carefully timed steps-so sweet. Now my two are here and not even at nursery we are having friends over to hold our very own 'kitchen-nativity' and i can't wait!

james79 · 29/11/2008 14:41

Sorry 'how they'd like the parts allocated..'

v. tired...

h0ney · 08/12/2008 13:56

I just dropped my daughter (3) off for the dress rehersal and I was already welling up. I can't imaging how I am going to hold it together for the actual performance.

wideratthehips · 08/12/2008 18:12

i'm 27 wks preg. so very emotional about everything. ds1 is in reception so the year1 do the actual nativity and the receptions dress up and dance and sing but i will be very overcome...

gibba8 · 08/12/2008 19:12

My DD (aged 4) is the chief angel in her nativity play tomorrow. She is singing a solo to baby jesus and also has 13 lines to say. This is the same girl who sat with her back to the audience last year and told her teacher 'make all those people go away!!!'

clam · 08/12/2008 19:19

I might have got nostalgic and emotional when watching our Foundation nativity this afternoon (as own DCs past this stage), excpet for kid at front of stage who managed to get his big toe up his nose during the opening song. PMSL, I'm afraid!

Hulababy · 08/12/2008 19:38

Oh yes We had ours last week on Thursday and Friday. 6y DD was Mary and sang solo.

I was good. I didn't cry but it was a close thing! The second rendition of Away in a Manager at the end had me with a lump on the throat!

But oh, I was so proud, lol! I even have a mini video of her sinigng on my Facebook account so that my parents and sister could see (as they couldn't attend).

moodlumhohohoodlum · 08/12/2008 19:47

Its the big day in the hoodlum house tomorrow, and as I speak dcs are lying in bed practising their carols. They are 3.4 and 4.5. Hilarious and sweet.

flamesparrow · 08/12/2008 19:47

DD is in the choir.

She has no problem with this, but for me it is bringing back the memories of Alison Johnson always being the princess/snow queen etc with all the pretty costumes whilst I was in uniform in "the choir"

If the same child who has been a big part in each play so far gets Mary or chief angel I will be ranting on here tomorrow about the blonde kids getting the main parts

boyswillbeboys · 09/12/2008 15:43

Am feeling slightly less sentimental now that we have just received a letter from school informing us that cameras/recorders are not welcome but would we like to purchase a professionally produced DVD for £10

christywhisty · 09/12/2008 16:23

It's my last primary christmas carol concert tonight [ssad]. I know I will cry, but I have some lovely videos of dd picking her nose as a shepherd and as a knickerless angel.

christywhisty · 09/12/2008 16:25

ps ours did Whoops a daisy angel and also Sleepy Shepherd twice.

Oh that sucks

DD was a star it turned out - all her class were stars (yr 1 were support for yr 2 iyswim). She looked very pretty but so serious - only one smile at the beginning.

mashedbanana · 09/12/2008 21:39

my dd's nativity tomorrow she's mary and i'm so excited.all afternoon she's been walking round with a tea towel on her head.

LilySwalLoosHerTurkeyBaster · 09/12/2008 21:43

Shed a tear at ds play today when he did the solo he was crying over and saying he couldn't do when he was chosen weeks ago was very proud as was he of himself!

My dd (aged 4) is in her first nativity play next week- she is an angel, like all the P1s. I am SO going to be blubbing! I cried at her ballet show too . THanks for the reminder to bring tissues!

ggirlsbells · 10/12/2008 12:43

ds is joseph next week and singing a solo

his front teeth fell out today

chocolateorange · 10/12/2008 12:44

the lump in my throat begins the second I walk into the hall.

the first tear is shed as the children walk on stage.

by the last song I'm in floods and when the lights go back on I'm the talk of the school with my red, rashy face, puffy eyes and snotty nose.

my dc are nursery and reception age, i do so hope I can control myself a little as they progress through the school. If not for myself but for my poor, humiliated dc.

basementbear · 12/12/2008 11:54

We had our nativity on Wednesday - it was lovely, DH and I were in tears of laughter though at DS2 who was an angel. He is such a serious little chap normally and looked so cute and funny dressed up in his wings and tinsel halo . BTW all of you who said Joseph is always the tallest boy - you were right!!
