I'm of the 'first weekend in December' school of thought, but DH reckons advent is 28 days not 25 . Personally I don't give a crap because neither of us are christians but we do have a mahoosive ugly fabric advent wall hanging with pockets big enough for a big bar of chocolate per day so I wouldn't want to wait too long and miss some scoffing opps.

DD has her birthday on the 4th, so the weekend following that, which is the 6/7th this year.

poppy34 · 25/11/2008 15:04

usually would be second weekend in dcember but we're away so will be weekend of 12th this time. Personally I love to cover house in christmas tat as early as possible so its a running battle with dh not to

jelliebelly · 25/11/2008 15:05

weekend before christmas

saltire · 25/11/2008 16:07

If it was up to DH, then it would go up on Christmas Eve and be down again on 26th!
I don't like/want them up to early, so probably between teh 10th and the 12th.

kee27 · 25/11/2008 17:03

duckyfuzz · 25/11/2008 17:21

DTs birthday is 14 Dec, so tree etc waits until 15th

vesela · 25/11/2008 17:56

The weekend before Christmas, at my parents', which is where I've spent all my Christmases but three...

This year we're hosting Christmas, and so whoo hoo, I'm going to have my first ever Christmas tree (at the age of 40). Bramshott - that's who all those decorations are for!

We'll probably put it up on the 22nd.

whomovedmychocolate · 25/11/2008 20:40

Bramshott - we have a box of decorations we've had for years and we just use them again and again. Some of them are ancient and I tactfully throw away the rubbish ones the dcs/dns have sent over the years .

DD has already made a cbeebies christmas mobile this year - it's hideous and used up 12 tubes of glitter. It looks like Julian Clary's jockstrap, but she's chuffed with it - it may have to go in her room actually because it keeps shedding glitter on my head!

Cbeebies.co.uk has some cracking christmas make and do things to keep the little buggers quiet for ten minutes while you write your christmas cards btw!

It used to be after the 9th December as that's DD2's birthday and we liked to keep it seperate. Bbut she now likes them up for her birthday so will probably be the second weekend in December.

frankbestfriend · 25/11/2008 22:19

lots of December birthdays here, seems like we all make an effort to seperate Christmas and birthday for the dcs.

I feel a bit sorry for dd, Christmas and birthday seem to roll into one somewhat, and then she has nothing to look forward to for another year. Plus they miss out on the 'summer' type presents like a new bike or a trampoline.

nappyaddict · 25/11/2008 22:30

mrswoolf and jux - do all your decorations go up on xmas eve or just the tree?

WilfSell · 25/11/2008 22:33

Please god tell me everyone on the thread said Xmas Eve?

Oh cripes. When I wrote that I saw the words 'When you put out your nativity scene...?'

I don't think I belong on this thread AT ALL.

Linnet · 25/11/2008 22:48

I put up the Christmas tree 12 days before Christmas and take it down 12 days after. This was what my mum always did and I've carried on doing it then. I don't think I could cope with it being up any earlier.

Lurcio · 25/11/2008 23:00

We're going away to my parents on 20th Dec, so I think I 'm going to have t put them up on the 6th/7th, otherwise there's not much point.
I already have my fairy lights up, but they're not christmas decorations, they're 'mood lighting'. I have no man to camplain about them now, so I can have them up all year round

pinkmunkee · 26/11/2008 08:45

Beginning of December, either the 1st of the first weekend depending on how busy I am! It comes down early though- can't stand it after Christmas, for some reason, and usually have taken it down by New Years Eve.

hecate · 26/11/2008 08:48

1st december. the kids just can't wait any longer.

we spend the whole month up to our ears in bloody tinsel.

It's just so so classy.

ho-hum, the kids love it though.

Madsometimes · 26/11/2008 09:59

1st December or as near to it as we can. We also have an old, uncoordinated box of decorations in the loft. The children love rummaging through it and seeing what they can find. No tasteful minimalism in our house.

We have a real tree now the children are older, when we had babies we used a light artificial tree just in case anyone pulled it over. I do not think you have to go treeless with babies, but it is a good idea to go for a small one.

JulesJules · 26/11/2008 10:12

18th December, one week before Christmas day.
Everything comes down on 12th Night.

WotsThatSkippy · 26/11/2008 10:13

13th Dec - my late grandmothers birthday. We used to do it earlier, but since my granny died we do it on this day as a special way to remember her.

throckenholt · 26/11/2008 10:14

Christmas Eve.

compo · 26/11/2008 10:18

weekend b4 xmas

only exception is if inlaws or my parents are coming early to 'do xmas' as we're not seeing them on the actual day

only1malteaser · 26/11/2008 10:19

Normally a couple of weeks before xmas but will be earlier this year as ds1 got real idea of what it's all about this year and will do my head in as soon as he spys a tree in shop!

nappyaddict · 26/11/2008 10:25

throckenholt - is that all the decorations or just the tree?

kiddiz · 26/11/2008 10:32

My rule is that I won't have decorations up long enough for me to have to dust them or round them so it's the week before Christmas in the Kiddiz household!!
There are houses round here who have had theirs up for a week already! We have a real tree and it would be bald by the 25th if it was up now even if it was one that wasn't supposed to drop

lizziemun · 26/11/2008 11:22

I have been debating with myself whether to do it the night of the 30th nov so they are up when dd's get up or when she is at school on the 1st.
