Am going to do an Amazon order and want to get some new stories for ds. What comes after the Gruffalo and Charlie and Lola type books?

DS is five and has been enjoying chapter books since he was 4 eg: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Flat Stanley, Jeremy James.

For picture books, he still enjoys the Gruffalo etc but also more advanced things like 'The Magic Paintbrush' also by Julia Donaldson.

Also reference books about science eg weather, human body. Usborne have some good ones for 4 yr olds.

My 5 year old loves Horrid Henry books.

For my 5 year old twin boys I ordered The Stick Man{new Julia Donaldson book) and another Simon Bartram book(they love those). We got the new Man on the Moon one they adore the first one and the under sea one.

I love this site as it has great suggestions by age group. You don't have to order from them and you can download extracts to have a look.

DS2 is just 5 and we have read all the Roald Dahl books too. Some of the Jeremy Strong books are good too although some may be abit old. You could try The Indoor Pirates.

DS2 got this for Christmas last year, when he was 4 and loves it. It is great for bedtimes

I 2nd, 3rd and 4th Stick Man - it's brilliant!

My 4 y/o DS also loves everything by Helen Cooper, pumpkin soup, tatty ratty etc.

Aliens Love Underpants - even my 8 year old still finds this hilarious and my 4 year old cries with laughter - particularly at the bit involving Pingy Pants Elastic .

Slinky Malinky books are also funny - he's a very mischievous cat and the story is all in rhyme so it flows nicely.

Ooh, I ordered Aliens love Underpants for a gift for someone the other day. Will probably have to get another copy to keep in house.

The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark is my favourite book for this age group and is great for beginning to read stories with chapters to them.
