I usually spend £5-£10 on teacher gift and we dont' use the lollipop man as I park at parking area just at school gate.

bumbling · 21/11/2008 17:10

Very keen to see answers here as I'm first time schooler. Do you spend the same on TA's etc and what do teachers really like.

Flier · 21/11/2008 17:20

well i have already bought a pen and notepaper set for both teacher and TA, as I have an inkling that the teacher is teetotal. Will prob get a wee pack of choccies to go with it.
just don't know what to get for the lollipop man....I know for sure he's teetotal too

Would you get booze otherwise?

Flier · 21/11/2008 17:29

not sure. tbh glad i don't have to consider it. I do remember seeing on mumsnet last christmas, mums buying teachers bottles of wine.

pointydog · 21/11/2008 17:34

i ussually don't spend anything unless the dds advise me

bumbling · 21/11/2008 17:34

Will try and do a thread search. Also should add that I reckon a fiver is a fair price, they're going to get 24 plus presents potentially. Think I'd probably do something slightly different and slightly less, or is that mean, for the TA's.

sophy · 21/11/2008 18:12

Depends on the school, and the teachers.

When dc were in state school I gave quite generous gift vouchers to the teachers, slightly less to the TAs. They were mostly young, single women who I felt would really appreciate it.

Now dc are in private school, and most of teachers are older, married, and probably better paid they get very small token gift, about £5 plant or soap etc, or Oxfam Unwrapped school books, which goes down very well.

Dc always do hand-made cards for them, which they like.

Wouldn't bother with the lollipop person unless you know that everyone else is.

i give the teacher and teaching assistant the same having worked in schools i know they boththey both work has hard has each other i normally spend five pound on each

a box of biscuits for the lollypop man might be nice!

Flier · 21/11/2008 18:19

£5-ish seems to be a poular figure then.

We have an extremely sensible solution - the class rep collects donations from parents to get John Lewis vouchers for the teacher & the TA. Suggested donation is £5 so assuming everyone 'donates' £5 - that's £75 of JL vouchers each. Beats upteen boxes of chocolates, biscuits, flowers, smellies & wine!

Flier · 21/11/2008 19:20

very sensible, but it must be a nightmare, collecting all the money from all the parents.

We also do a collection & get vouchers & flowers. Also get a big card that all the kids write in. The class rep organises it.

If I were a teacher I'd much prefer to be able to choose something I really like!

£30 budget for the school people in total - this year split between 2 teachers (job share)

bythepowerofgreyskull · 21/11/2008 19:39

spent £6.99 each teacher/teaching assistant last christmas and £10 end of year each

mumto2andnomore · 21/11/2008 19:52

Im a teacher and honestly dont expect anything. A card is nice especially if its been made by the child or has a nice message in. If my children do buy me anything then chocolate oranges/little box of celebrations is plenty.

PurplePillow · 21/11/2008 19:56

My dd and I are making mince pies for her teacher

We did this last year and her teacher thought it was lovely because dd had done them herself

janeite · 21/11/2008 19:57

Lollipop man = a handmade card and a tin of homemade fudge or something of that ilk.

Teachers - used to be about £5 but now both dds are in secondary it will be zilch.

ohmeohmy · 21/11/2008 20:14

my son has loads of TAs as its a special school. I give them a big box of homemade biscuits and stuff. They always go down really well.

wendylanguage · 21/11/2008 20:21

I have got my DS's preschool teacher and the two TAs the same - a pair of gloves each! Decided it was a good gift as they are always outside with the LOs. Will also make cards for them. Teachers get loads of chocolates as well so it's nice to get something different imo.

newmumtobe84 · 22/11/2008 13:34

I am a teacher and mum to be (scary being both!). Although I'm secondary the things that I've really enjoyed getting are homemade cards/bits from the kids. Generally if I have a form they have created a big form card and chocs. I have also had vouchers where the form collected £2 each and gave that to me as vouchers.

I don't think we really expect big presents and cards are by far the best thing.

Leslaki · 22/11/2008 15:23

I usually do wine as I work as a TA and know that by the end of this term most teachers are rather frazzled by it all after doing Xmas plays etc and they deserve it!!!

PandaG · 22/11/2008 15:37

I have pinched an idea from another thread and am going to make small christmas cakes for each teacher and TA - will cost
