I want to spend a daft amount of december eating roses (the kind that is wrapped in tinfoil) and watching films.

The only Christmas films we own are Spot's Christmas (truly an undiscovered classic of naive art-note especially the reindeer duet) and Elmo's Christmas Countdown. I feel we can do better. Oh and March of the Penguins.

So far I have on my lovefilm list

polar express
miracle on 34th Street

Am wondering about the Wizard of Oz and Its a Wonderful Life?

What am I missing?

Kids are 3 and 5

BTW I cannot bloody STAND the snowman, nor Father Christmas.

The Santa Clause with Tim Allen...a modern classic which makes me cry every time I see it.

The Wizard of Oz
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Muppet's Christmas Carol
The Grinch

It's a Wonderful Life is a good one, but not for the kids.

erm, can't think of anything else.

FrostyTheSnowgirl · 19/11/2008 21:19

My favourite christmas films are:

The Grinch

Santa Claus The Movie (probably the best xmas film ever)

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation

Muppet's Christmas Carol

Home Alone 1 & 2 - perfect family films!

White Christmas

Miracle on 34th Street

DVD's are out ready I can't wait! I'm sure I'll be back with more when I think of them

Fillyjonk · 19/11/2008 21:26

ah why is its a wonderful life not for the kids?

i have somehow never seen it

oh dear dp is a muppet fan, i expect that I will have to watch the muppet one...

Its A Wonderful Life is, for me, one of the best movies ever . However it is quite long and I think whilst my kids dip in and out whilst I'm watching it, I don't think they would watch the whole thing (they are 4 and 8).

FrostyTheSnowgirl · 19/11/2008 21:34

Don't worry. The muppet one is fab! i had it on dvd before I even had ds lol

BecauseImWorthIt · 19/11/2008 21:36

Miracle on 34th Street, but only if it's the original version!

mochyndu · 19/11/2008 21:50

What about The Snowman and Father Christmas.

slayerette · 19/11/2008 21:53

The Railway Children [sob]

'Daddy! My Daddy!'

[sob, sob, sob]

slayerette · 19/11/2008 21:54

Oh, and Die Hard!

It's A Wonderful Life is gorgeous but deffo no good for young children. It's black and white for one and is about a man in an overcoat wandering around a town looking at things, on the whole (I am of course reducing it to its true "essence" here") and being reminded that it is, indeed, a wonderful life and therefore we shouldn't kill ourselves. It's lovely, far better than my daft description but one for you to savour with your dp and the chocolates - or even just the chocolates.

For all of you - Elf - stupid and juvenile - but we all like it!
My girls loved All Dogs Christmas Carol at that age too - which is dogs, singing and a weird demon dog thing who gets her come-uppance iirc.

suggy · 19/11/2008 22:20

Can I second Elf - we watch it all year, and have to play and replay Elf fixing the star to the tree... DDs are 3 and 5.

NotanOtter · 19/11/2008 22:22

dh actually burst out crying at little women last boxing day!

I have to agree - Muppet Christmas Carol is great and Elf is one I missed until recently but it is funny. We still watch the Spot one and my eldest is 11! Didn't like Polar Express the elves are too scary and ugly. The santa clause is good and Disney's countdown to Christmas has good songs for little uns. For you (and older kids love it too) I would get Singin in the Rain and Sun Valley Serenade (a great corny oldy with snow). I am going to stock up on some old movies and indulge over the festive season. They are never on tv when I have some time to watch. Another nice one is called "Fairy Tale, a true story" with Paul Mcgann and Harvey Keitel -v. good special effects and feel good factor.
