What are your dc's favourite can't-put-down, read-5000-times books?

I want to buy dd's some new books for Christmas.

Dd1 is almost 9 (and is a rather reluctant reader)
Dd2 is 5 and is just starting to free-read so books for her to read independantly would be good
Dd3 is 16 months and adores to snuggle up with a book

Any recommendations?

Not Now Bernard

It's where I got my inspiration, anyway

DD1 loved it, and now dd2 is getting into it

Plonker · 17/11/2008 22:58

What sort of age range is the book for bernard?

love your name btw

Captain flippin underpants.
Horrid flippin Henry.
Mr Men.

DS is 7 and has read all sorts, Horrible Histories, Harry Potter (the short ones) etc, but these are the ones he returns to.

DD, not so sure. Likes her Little Misses and fairy stories. She is 4.

DD1 was really into it at the time I joined MN (which was Summer 07) so she would have been 3 1/2

DD2 is 2.3 and starting to like it

DD1 tells me they have it at school, too (she's in Reception)

"Pants" by Giles Andrae for the 5 year old - my 2 can never hear enough of it

"Dear Zoo" by Rod Campbell for the baby

GrimmaTheNome · 17/11/2008 23:36

My DD is 9 and is not a very keen reader (of books, that is, loves Beano and DFC). But she is steadily working her way through Lemony Snicket (boxed set from The Book People xmas present last year, lots of books but each is quite short). Has read the first 4 Harry Potters so far. From the school library, top choices recently are 'Goosebumps' series and some Jaqueline Wilsons.

She used to like Captain underpants and Horrid Henry but I think they are a bit passe now.

Joke books def good stocking filler!

For your little one - there is also a book I love but can't remember the author of called Pass the Jam, Jim. All mine loved it to death.

Lilyloo · 18/11/2008 21:30

YOU CHOOSE ds 6 has been reading it for 3 years and dd 3 now likes it too. It's a very well read book in our house!

snickersnack · 18/11/2008 21:31

For your dd3 - Baby Catalogue by the Ahlbergs (such a lovely book), and also Peepo. My ds (similar age) is also obsessed by the Gruffalo, Maisy, and this. He really loves that one, more than anything.

elmoandella · 18/11/2008 21:32

calm down boris

my ds loves doing the puppet while we read to dd who's just 17 months. she really giggles when it kisses her. and ds like the bits where we check for bugs.

Fennel · 18/11/2008 21:33

dd2's favourites, she's 7, the ones she keeps going back to are:

Peter Pan.
The Treasure Seekers.
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase (current obsession).

and for slightly younger readers but she still loves them - would do for a 5yo:
Horrid Henry
Sophie series, Dick King-Smith.

dd1 is 8, her keep=return-to favourites include:
Humphrey the Hamster series
Dick King-Smith animal stories.
Faraway tree series.
Jacqueline Wilson.

4yo dd3 favourites (to be read to, she can't read) this month are:
Hairy Maclarey series.
Dr Seuss.
Miffy.
