We exchange Christmas lists, which might sound a bit unChristmassy but it works for us.

Often she asks for special hair stuff etc that she wouldn't buy for herself.

A bracelet so far.

cariboo - how come she didn't get you a birthday present?

My 2 sisters and I go shares on something for ours but every year is a struggle. My step-dad gets most things she might want and the little bits and pieces she buys herself as and when. This year we're getting her an encyclopedia (which she wants apparently) and a couple of other things.

In the past we've bought her and my step-dad theatre vouchers, they always go down well!

Joint present for parents of 2 bottles of nice wine and one of the charity gifts (we've paid for one year of teacher training in Africa as they are both retired teachers).

Crossword clue book and something else, probably perfume.

A breadmaker for mum and dad together

Tinkerisdead · 20/11/2008 17:21

my mum and stepdad are avid gardeners, she does the greenhouse, he does the veg patch.
Ive made them each a hamper in those trug containers, one pink one blue, with kneelers, seeds, a book on each of their areas, a thermal mug etc.

My mum asked for a contribution towards her safari expedition in the spring.

I said I'd buy her some Sun cream.

some great ideas here - thanls everyone - can you get the mag subscripptions online - a really good idea but cant fing on tesco.com

Chirpygirl · 22/11/2008 14:53

God, I am so cheap! If I spend more than about a tenner on my mum she gets really cross as she knows we can't afford it. I am going to make her a massive batch of biscuits as she can't eat dairy/gluten etc.
She is also getting an A3 photo collage of DD's and a photo desk calender that I do for her every year.
DSibs adn I are also doing her a surprise stocking as she lives alone. DD's and I will make it and we will all fill it with silly things. We are going to hide it in the house and then tell her on christmas morning where to look. she has no idea we are doing it so we all reckon she will cry!

Chocolateshoes - you need to go into www.tesco.com/clubcard/deals/ then select magazines from the list - you then go through a check out but enter your clubcard voucher numbers instead of a credit/debit card number and you pay for it online with your clubcard vouchers.

I'm getting my mum the Mamma Mia DVD and a bottle of that Frangellico liquer as she loves it and hasn't been able to find it for years - spotted it in tescos! Just small things this year as 1st Xmas as a single mum and not as well off as last year!

pagwatch · 22/11/2008 15:29

I love the idea of buying a wicker basket and doing a personalised hamper but instead will be taking her to LK Bennett early december to choose something.

That is because she is unbelieveably picky and passive aggressive so a total nightmare. If she chooses it she can't bitch to everyone else about it later

sazzerbear · 22/11/2008 15:38

Framed pics of the grand children - always a winner!!

lumpsdumps · 22/11/2008 15:46

I've got my mum a lovely angora wrap cardigan and a pair of trousers, also got her some make up as she doesn't make enough of herself!
