Advent calendar dilemma

Wallace · 17/11/2008 20:52

Ds1 was so desperate for the Lego City adent calendar that he said he would pay for it. So I have ordered it.

Dd and ds2 are just going to have normal choclate ones.

But then I spotted the Playmobil unicorn one - dd would love it. But that would leave ds2 out. Ds2 is only 2 and will be so excited having a chocolate everyday, but I think he may feel a bit left out if the other two are getting toys.

What should I do?

Get the toy one.

I'm not convinced that chocolate for breakfast is a good idea.

DS had a chocolate advent calendar one year and it took us 'til the following February to finally get through to him that chocolate first thing in the morning doesn't normally happen.

Just get an advent calendar with pictures only. Works a treat

ChasingSquirrels · 17/11/2008 21:00

my 2.9yo would be estatic with a choc every day, depends on the child I suppose.

savoycabbage · 17/11/2008 21:00

If you get dd2 one you are going to have to pay for the LEGO one though.

And you are right you can't leaver the other one out. I have a two year old and she would go mad if she had a chocolate one her sister had a toy in hers. I am cowering thinking about it.

I think that you are 'devaluing' the decision that your son has made about his calendar if you see what I mean.

Wallace · 17/11/2008 21:06

I see what you mean, savoy, that is the clincher.

Chocolate for breakfast it is

And I think I might just have to get dd some of those lovely playmobil unicorns for her stocking...

Now I think of it, mine usually get one each because my mum usually buys them for them...

Funny how she would never have done that for us

i have hit this dilema too...ds1 will have the playmobil knights one (first advent calander ever) but ds2 who is 20mths wont have one..and i'd rather not give him choc every day...will it all be over his head?...there was never any advent calendars in my house growing up (emotionally sterile upbringing emoticon)

BananaFruitBat · 17/11/2008 21:54

I got over the problem by getting DS a wooden box one. I can put a small toy in, or a small choccie, or a couple of stickers..... etc.

wideratthehips - I got DS a musical advent calendar when he was very little. It was from Smiths, and you had to press a button at the top. Oh, how BabyBat loved it. It droves us barmy. Do get one, but put it out of reach.....

wideratthehips · 17/11/2008 22:02

that sounds a nice idea..have bought a henious tap dancing singing father christmas from sainsburys, which the children love, so i'm getting into the commercial spirit!! (goes off to have a look at smiths website)

needacuppa · 18/11/2008 23:07

I made one a few years ago and we use it every year, dds both love it. It is just 25 baby socks pegged on a line across the kitchen, I cross-stitched the numbers on each but it would still look cute without. I put a sweetie or tiny present in each depending on how flush we are.

Wallace · 19/11/2008 10:31

That sounds lovely needacuppa, I'll remember that for next year

My ds is the only child in the family and last year we had 4 advent calendars between us because other family members buy them for him and me!! Drives me bonkers but it doesn't matter how many times I ask them no to get one they still do.

I'm copying the idea of having a non-choc calendar from here. I've bought a cat's cradle to learn to do that and some spinning tops so far. Also got christmas card making and present wrapping on the list. Aswell as Christingle, learn a joke and have a wander round the village to look at the Christmas lights.

MilaMae · 19/11/2008 11:09

We have a wooden one between all 3 and I've bought them a tiny card one each to have in their bedrooms-cost me a shocking £9 for 3 teeny ones!!!!!!!!

I hate the chocolate ones(if mil gets them one dp and I will be eating them) and to be frank wish I'd never started the wooden one but they love it.
