Buying 'cheap' Xmas cake/pudding now- can I 'marinade' it myself?

By cheap I mean perhaps Aldi or Asda. Is it worth me 'injecting' one with alcohol myself to make it richer? Or would I be better off spending more money first up?

Bumping for you.

gaussgirl, I strongly recommend Lidl's Christmas pudding. My Mum bought me one years ago and inspite of my reservations, it was fantastic. Before actually using it on Christmas Day, I compared ingredients with that of M&S puddings and Lidl's was better, and a fraction of the cost. I haven't tried their Christmas cake but have no reason to believe it wouldn't be excellent. Suggest you look at the fruit/nut content of some so-called quality brands (Waitrose/M&S/Tesco Finest etc) then compare with the cheaper labels before making your decision. I think you might be pleasantly suprised. I see no reason why you couldn't feed uniced cakes with alcohol yourself- tho you'd need to start to do that asap.

I seem to recall one the food magazines (BBC good food?) did a comparitive tasting a couple of years ago - and the Aldi one came out top!
