Do you need a fireplace to 'make' christmas...????

Am wondering.

we are going to be renovating the house in the new year, pretty much the entire downstairs. Our lounge currently has a very crappy-built fireplace, and as DH is a bricklayer by trade, he finds it a tad embarrassing in his home!

when we renovate, it is coming out.....and here lies the problem.

He wants to do away completely with it, I want a new one built. MAINLY because I think christmas will be poorer without a fireplace to hang stockings on.

sooooooooooo

do you need a fireplace to 'make' christmas???

your answers will kind of solve the arguement between DH and I tho, so answer in my favour honestly please

how will santa get in?

you are making it quite difficult - he will haeve to ask tinkerbell yet again for some magic fairy dust to get into someones house - she has to work all year to get that stuff made up from the tooth faries ( who are not to nice and often po-faced at her christmas requests)

we have a fireplace sort of but it doesnt have a mantel. We do hang a big swag across the chimney breast and I have a couple of statues on the hearth [which is raised] but still feels christmas like to me.

ChasingSquirrels · 14/11/2008 19:36

well, we put pillowcases at the bottom of the bed - as I did as a child.
tbh our fireplace doesn't play any a big part in our christmas.

or to be honest - WTF are you an about

Nemowith3and1tobe · 14/11/2008 19:36

we also have a key fo santa as ds didnt like the idea that he could let himself in down the chimney[made worse last year when we were broken into on dec 1st]

psychomum5 · 14/11/2008 19:41

ta custy......that is the answer I need to sway DH;O

ouch nemo.......not nice . Has your DS got over his fear yet??

wats, I dream of a stone fireplace........

chasing squirrals......I know christmas will still be christmas without a fireplace, but in my head I need one

I am thinking of having our fireplace taken out (as part of an extension). Am now going to be questioning friends as to how they involve their fireplaces in xmas

Surfermum · 14/11/2008 19:59

We have two open fireplaces and they look gorgeous at Christmas with greenery, twinkling lights and stockings hung. Add a blazing log fire and chestnuts in the roaster ... it's pretty idyllic. And that doesn't happen often in our house!

psychomum5 · 14/11/2008 20:09

surfer, I feel the need to visit......getting ideas for my new fireplace you understand (and a natter and coffee too)

chasing........IMO, you can only have the real magic of xmas if you have a mantle to hand the stockings on.....

I think the fireplace makes a nice focal point for the room and if you come to sell it might be a sticking point, but FC is very clever and gets in whichever way he can.

Guadalupe · 14/11/2008 20:12

We throw letters for father christmas on the fire and leave his brandy and mince pie on the hearth. Stockings are on beds.

I never had a fireplace growing up, he came in the back door.

psychomum5 · 14/11/2008 20:16

I have to admit, I never grew up in a house with a fireplace......so I do understand that father christmas will still manage to battle his way in, but I really wanna still have a fireplace, so am sulking and demanding hoping mumsnet backs me up.

I live in a 1970s pebble-dashed terrace, with no chimney. When we moved in there was a monstrous great brick and concrete 'fireplace' complete with fake chimneybreast and electric fire with plastic logs. It took up half the room, so was ripped out sharpish.

Not worked out how FC gets into our house yet (DS is only 2) but will presumably mutter something about 'magic'...

psychomum5 · 14/11/2008 20:19

rhinestone......DH says ours is monstrous!

tis not that bad, but still pretty hidious.........and it is fake.

but you can have wonderful fake ones now, which is what I am hankering for.

well, until DH builds us our forever-house and I have a real-deal-fire-with-chimney

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 14/11/2008 20:20

in fact, go to my profile and you can see our current one (about halfway down fronted by a dancing-posing Megan).

tis not hidious, but still pretty ugly.

I think they are a nice focal point for a room tbh. And can be lovely at Xmas. Etc Etc.

Tell him Bree has 3 and you only want 1 so not to be a meanie!

psychomum5 · 14/11/2008 20:27

Buda, I am planning on telling him that.

oh, and that surfer also has more than one too.......he annot complain, I am thinking of the credit crunch, I only want the one

OP posts:
RhinestoneCowgirl · 14/11/2008 20:28

psycho - that is much smaller than ours was, it even had a special bit sticking out to put the telly on [classy]. Suspect it was a Pride and Joy of previous owner (a builder)

Buda · 14/11/2008 20:28

Actually you are a mum to his 5 children - you deserve whatever you want!!!!

psychomum5 · 14/11/2008 20:30

buda......also a fab arguement

We moved into a new house two years ago, and as it is a new build it doesnt have a fireplace, only central heating. Tbh i really missed it that first christmas as we had one in our old house, but i soon found somewhere else to put our stockings up. And as for Father Christmas as he has magic he can get in anywhere. Has no-one seen The Santa Clause??
