Just got the letter home, that my ds needs a sheep costume for the school nativity play. I've been on the internet and all the places I have found are out of stock in the age 6 or involve shipping from the US anyone any ideas.Anyone got one to sell? I wouldn't know were to start if I had to make it myself.

Ebay have loads

Hulababy · 14/11/2008 17:37

Looks like Woolworths are having real problems this year. Friend has been to try and get Mary and Camel costumes to no avail. And both say not available on the website. What is going on with them, they ar normally the best place to get them!

titfortwat · 14/11/2008 17:38

They have some on now and they are buy it nows

SoupDragon · 14/11/2008 17:38

Bah! (or Baa!)

BabyTalk13 · 14/11/2008 17:43

When I was working at a school they didnt really like it when the children came in these costumes, they preferred home made ones..... not that id know where to start and sometimes its not always easy for the parents. Id prob just get a white wolly jumper and some white(ish) trousers with black gloves and shoes then either use face paint or mask for the face???
God I feel sorry for my daughter!!!! I would say the sheep is the hardest costume out of everyone.

yomellamoHelly · 14/11/2008 17:57

Tescos are doing some apparently. Or you could get a sheepskin rug and make a cloak from it. Or find a bomber jacket with a sheepskin lining and turn it inside out. Or find a white fluffy gilet.
But why not just get an old white pillow case and a pile of cotton wool and get glueing. Match up with long socks (black) and maybe a cotton wool paper plate hat.
Imo it's the making of the costume that's half the fun.

I was about to say tesco.. I am sure I saw some last week

ShyBaby · 14/11/2008 17:58

Think yourself lucky...I have to make a Christmas Tree! (secretly very exited) .

Couldn't you get a cheap fluffy throw from somewhere and make it out of that?

SoupDragon · 14/11/2008 18:00

Rectangle of fake fur. Cut hole in the middle for head to go through - voila! one furry tunic. Team with black tights and long sleeved top. Make wooly ears to glue onto a black alice band and there you go.

Hulababy · 14/11/2008 18:00

Last year we discovered it was cheaper to buy from woolworths than to get the material to make a costume ourselves!

NorbertDentressangle · 14/11/2008 18:05

Definitely make one -theres not even any sewing involved if you use Soupy's suggestion.

I've just made DS's King costume by recycling a piece of sparkly material from the DC's dressing up box, a little sewing and ..dare I say...I actually enjoyed doing it and am impressed with the result

raisinbran · 14/11/2008 18:08

Thanks all, I have just double checked Woolworths and they are still out of stock in his size.
I did have more joy on ebay... however I am thinking isn't ridiculous to spend 16 quid on a costume they will be in for an hour.I have seen instructions on one site that details how to make one with a white towel I wonder if I bribe my friend with wine she'll come and help she is more artistic and creative then me.

Yeh I like soups idea. definitly more fun making one!
Shybaby that sound fun making a tree, lots of green clothes with tinsel and baubles stuck to it and sum brown boots and a star stuck on the head.... haha only children could still look cute dressed up in silly clothes!!

MadameCastafiore · 14/11/2008 18:15

Go and get a lenghth of fluffy material from haberdashers and make a tabard type thing and 2 ears and glue those onto a hairband and then paint nose black with face paint - instant (well almost sheep costume!) - and I do think cpstumes that are made no matter how dodgy they look shows a bit more commitment than just buying one - you would get huge points for being a fab mum at DDs school.

ShyBaby · 14/11/2008 18:27

Yes babytalk, it means I get to play with glitter too...can't wait

KatieDD · 14/11/2008 18:47

The big Tesco's by us have them.

traceybath · 14/11/2008 18:47

I'm making a sheep costume. Got some fluffy fleecy material in john lewis (about £6) and them going to make a tabard type top and fluffy ears to go on a band on head.

Should be fairly straight-forward - we are definitely encouraged to make the costumes.

Portofino · 14/11/2008 18:52

I'm quite amazed that you can actually buy a sheep costume! In my day you made one out of....well I actually can't remember....but still. Sames goes for nativity play outfits - old sheets and a bit of netting surely.....God I'm getting old.

onebatmother · 14/11/2008 18:58

No no no! Tell me you can't buy a sheep/Mary costume in woolies! What happened to tea towels and sheets?

ps Sheep just need white t-shirt shorts and socks, and homemade sheep face mask, if you dont' have time to get fluffy fabric etc.

Littlefish · 14/11/2008 19:02

Buy an old arran jumper from a charity shop and put elastic round the bottom to make it bulge out. Make a white wool pom pom for a tail.

Attach a pair of white card ears onto a hairband.

Voila - one sheep.

Clayhead · 14/11/2008 19:02

I did a sheep costume last year!

Black polo neck and tights.

I sewed black felt ears onto an Alice band.

I bought some cream fur and made a tabard out of it - no hemming needed, just a stitch in each side and a head hole in the top!! Used a small strip of fur to sew onto the back for a tail.

gillybean2 · 14/11/2008 20:43

I made a sheep costume when ds was at play school. Found some fabric at the material shop that was white bobbly stuff with sheep printed on it. Made a sleeveless waistcoat out of three pices stitched together at shoulders and sides with a bit of velcro to fasten at front. Then a pair of very baggy trousers with elastic round the waistband. Worked very well and I get asked every year if they can borrow it for class 1.

I used same pattern to make a piggy outfit too. It works for most costumes really.

Remember to use more elastic than you need and safetypin it rather than knot it. Then you can let it out next year if you need it.

Good luck with whatever you go with!

Ali4cotswolds · 18/11/2008 22:49

I've got one from Woolworths brand its aged 3-4 years, height up to 104cm, chest 55cm but I'm guessing it will be too small??
