trifle
chocolate yule log
christmassy ice cream
fruit salad
How about a large mincemeat tart with some pretty pastry decorations?

Sticky toffee pudding
Nigella's clementine cake

We always have a brandy, sticky date laden dessert as an alternative...

The other option is to make a Christmas bombe

These individual cappuccino chocolate mousses here are blumin lovely. Would be great after big xmas dinner. I made with decaf coffee and yogurt instead of raw egg and the kids loved them, and they are sophisticated enough for the adults too. I did them in a mixture of sherry and shot glasses!

Or Tiramisu - delia has a v easy recipe.

A chocolate roulard with Baileys cream.

Make the chocolate roulard and bake, whip up whipping cream with a good slug of Baileys, spread this in the middle and roll the roulard up. Place on you presentation plate and dust with icing sugar. Pop a sprig of holly on top.

Yummmm

thumbwitch · 13/11/2008 21:24

PenelopePitstops · 13/11/2008 21:25

summer pudding we always have!!

WobblyPig · 13/11/2008 21:25

I made a winter trifle with figs, apricots, dried pears and dates soaked in orange juice and brandy last year.

Lighter choices : tiramismu or pavlova.

janmoomoo · 13/11/2008 22:28

5gomad - where did you get chocolate creme brulee recipe from - sounds lovely?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 13/11/2008 22:29

It si in Delia's Chocolate book.

janmoomoo · 13/11/2008 22:43

Found that on delia online, looks fab, thanks.

It reminds me Delia has a brilliant chocolate bread and butter pudding which is gorgous and even better the next day. Might be a bit heavy after xmas dinnner tho.

Biscuits sounds nice, especially if you have xmas shaped cutters, as kids can help to do them, and you can decorate them - I personally have disasters with chocolate chip cookie dough, so I wouldn't recommend that type. Light oaty type ones with cherries or banana slices stuck on are nice.

Other things I've done/seen done are:
Pineapple upside down pudding, and have it with custard (preferably tinned custard!!) - it's nice and light after a big dinner, and if kids don't like xmas pud, they may prefer this (and even I can cook this and I'm hopeless!!).
Or poached pears put in a sundae glass, with melted chocolate and cream poured over and sprinkly chocolate bits etc?

I went to Germany for Xmas one year and we had an "apfelkuchen" (apple cake thing, but looked like a yule log) for pudding - it was lovely!
How about a gingerbread house? - you can get "kits" to do them.
Failing all that, buy/make a Black Forest Gateau!!! Yummy...

thumbwitch · 13/11/2008 23:15

I always used to make shortbread as I don't like "real" pastry - that can be cut into Christmassy shapes too.

Was this specifically for after-Christmas-dinner or are you just looking for things to make for Christmas generally?

GerrardWinstanley · 13/11/2008 23:18

I made Nigella's chocolate bread and butter pudding last year instead of Christmas pud. Tho I have adapted it to a 'bung it all in the pot' method. It cooked for the hour we took to eat Christmas dinner.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 14/11/2008 07:36

I have done that many times the bread and butter pudding, we are having it on Saturday night.

makealist · 14/11/2008 08:55

whats the recipe for a christmas bombe? it sounds good.

AttillaTheHan · 14/11/2008 09:32

How about Iced christmas pudding? Its on delia online, it is basically christmas pudding ice cream - gorgeous!
