Brownie Christmas fundraiser.

I know there is another Christmas school fair thread on the go, but I need ideas for a fundraising night for the Brownies.

As we are in the church hall we are a bit restricted. Church do not like "gambling" so raffle out of the question along with any other games of chance and probably a bottle stall.

I think I may get away with games like roll a penny as it can be described as a skill game. So I need more ideas like that.

Brownies will be running the stalls/ games with help so aimed at getting money off the parents and siblings.

They did a few craft things last year to sell, don't mind doing something like that but don't want to spend the next 5 weeks making things.

Calendars were suggested so might do them, fairly cheap I think to do.

Any other ideas please. TIA

Ooh tricky!

Could you try hook a duck and that sort of thing?

One idea that does work well is to have a matchstick currency. So, when parents etc arrive they buy so many matchsticks (in multiples of 10 works well)and use these to pay for the games etc. You can make them any value you like but make a rule that they can't be exchanged back for cash. That way Brownies can run the stalls without adult help as they are only counting the matchsticks; you make more money as most people buy more than they need and if you were so inclined you could count the money on the night so everyone knows how much was raised.

lucky dip - buy cheap packs of stationary and split them up add a lolly, Go to poundland and scour the shelves for suitable multipack items, wrap them up {pain in the jacksey but it's got to be done] hey presto!

cremolafoam · 10/11/2008 07:48

our brownies does a big breakfast. Everyone donates eggs bacon bread etc.
it is then cooked on a saturday morning and the whole district is invited for breakfast.(flyers)The brownies serve it up and public pay £3 each.
We raise hundreds this way.

skramble · 11/11/2008 00:35

Thanks for the ideas, lucky dip might be an idea, that isn't gambling surely . We could have a wrapping night and get the brownies practicing their wrapping skills.

Think the matchstick idea would confuse Brown Owl never mind the brownies, I think in this little village it would seem a bit radical, there was nearly a riot at the school bingo night because the price of the books were not right .

Hook a duck or something along those lines goo as we can pass it off as skill. Trying to think what we could get lots of cheap to use instead of ducks, will check out charity shops for magnetic fishing games.

Breakfast might be a bit beyond our limits.

Ask them each to fill a jam jar and decorate it. Put them all on a stall with numbered tickets and charge 50p - prize every time so it's not gambling.

Suggestions for contents - coloured cotton wool balls, copper coins, sweets etc.

Tell them to do as many as they like!

We always did tis with Cubs and it was immensely popular and 100% profit.

skramble · 11/11/2008 00:58

Thats a possible, but knowing our lot they would fill it with rubbish, but hey still get the cash

The list so far.

Roll a penny,
Hoopla type thing,
Hook a duck type thing,
Polar treasure hunt, treasure map (polystyrene block) and flags.
Penny in a bucket,
skittles.
Lucky dip.
Mystery Jam Jars.

Oh we are getting there.

oops forgot REINDEER FOOD! you must have a stall selling that.

I've done it in small food bags and tied the middle with fancy ribbon, and cut the top of the bag off to make it flair out. IFYKWIM (you are supposed to do it in small jam jars, baby food ones are ideal) then attach a poem

details here

skramble · 11/11/2008 22:59

Oh fantastic, kept seeing this mentioned and ment to look it up.

Do you think I should make them up or get brownies to do it, or would that spoil the magic , think I might do them. I ahve some cellophane bags that I can use and plenty sparkly ribbons. Thanks thats a great one.

Will watch with interest - we are doing magic reindeer food to sell but in cello bags from Lakeland, plus elf poo (midget gems), reindeer poo (choc raisins) and snowman poo (marshmallows) - kiddies, esp. boys, love them - all in cello bags.

skramble · 11/11/2008 23:11

LOL I can see doing a whole sweet stall, I used to do this anyway .

You can do a lucky square game (before the event so you don't upset the church) Basically print off grids of say 20 squares each & number them so 1 brownie gets 1 - 20, the next gets 21 - 40, then 41 - 60 etc etc to take home.
These are then sold to family/friends/parent's work colleagues etc, for 50p or £1.
Then you can do a prize (or more than 1) either on the night, or beforehand if its easier. Even better if you have any parents that can donate good prizes from their work, or similar, then every bit of what is raised can go to the brownies. If not, just take out the cost of what you buy for prizes from what you make. Chocolates or wine is good if you do have to buy prizes yourself, especially as there are some good bargains around at the mo.

bevlongy · 11/11/2008 23:12

ALSO how about seeing if you can organise a bag pack at a local supermarket on a weekend leading up to Christmas?

skramble · 11/11/2008 23:13

Sorry that is too much like a raffle and as the prizes will be given out on the night there would be no chance of us doing anything like that.

OP posts:
skramble · 11/11/2008 23:14

Think ours are a bit too young and feral to be let loose in a supermarket , would need toomany helpers I think to manage that. Ds has done it with the scouts so a bit older.

OP posts:
Furball · 12/11/2008 06:54

treaure hunt? you get people to chose where they think the treasure is and write their name - the nearest wins a prize.

Name the teddy? guess how many sweets are in the jar? Guess the weight of the christmas? cake?

fortyplus · 13/11/2008 15:20

This has made me think that we used to sell bags of Rendeer poo Chocolate raisins bought in a big sweetshop type jar but then bagged up into clear cello bags.

skramble · 15/11/2008 22:32

My DS is designing a tresure hunt type thing using a big polystyrene block and drawing grids on it. Polar treasure hunt.

Brown Owl already told guessing the name, weight or whatever not allowed , I would never say that was gambling but they say it is.

Oh forgot about the reindeer poo again, must put that in note book. I think I will make these up myself as a donation to the pack.
