So I let slip to my parents what we were going to get for ds1 - and they've gone and bought it instead....

... so now what do we get him?

He's 7, but doesn't really 'do' toys. We were going to get him a digital camera but that's scuppered now.

He likes sciencey things (but has already got microscope, telescope, binoculars, snap-together electronics set), just about any outdoor activity (but he had new bike for his birthday, has got his own skis, hasn't outgrown his football boots yet) and his Wii and ds. Am stuck for what to get as a "main" present (sort of £40-£60-ish, but a bit of flexibility if it's a great idea). We could just get him some Wii/ds games. which is great from the avoiding clutter point of view, but they don't exactly make impressive looking parcels and if possible I'd like him to have something which looks a bit more exciting before it's opened IYSWIM.

How about a make your own volcano set?

or any other science set?

Friendlypizzaeater · 09/11/2008 20:55

Printer for camera ?

Jux · 09/11/2008 21:01

How about saying "thank you so much for getting it for us" and reimbursing them?! Bloody cheeky of them if you ask me. Just bulldoze them - they know damn well you told them you were getting it, so give no quarter. If you have to, then tell them they've been out of order.

cherryliquormonster · 10/11/2008 01:17

i agree with jux, that was out of order. just tell them that you were planning on getting it and only told them so they wouldnt get it. give them the money for it and tell them that next time you wont bother telling them what you plan to buy.

Thankyouandgoodnight · 10/11/2008 09:37

Yes I agree and that's definitely a 'parents' present rather than a grandparents one. I would really really push it with them.

Other camera ideas - digital photo frame / photo albums /

purplemonkeydishwasher · 10/11/2008 09:41

i am very angry on your behalf. that's not on.

jelliebelly · 10/11/2008 09:41

the grandparents should be asking you for ideas if they are stuck not stealing your thunder. I think you need to give them the money for the camera and then give suggestions as to what they can get eg Wii/ds games etc. Why should you have the stress of racking your brains when you had already had a great idea!!!

pigleto · 10/11/2008 09:44

He sounds spoiled rotten to me, I can't believe how much stuff he has got at 7.

How about a tennis racket and some lessons?

dalek · 10/11/2008 09:46

What about a printer so that he can print his photos off - one of those where you can just place the camera on it? I was thinking about that for my dd (8).

hmmm..how about a 'first' laptop, think I saw one in the Argos catalogue (or a second hand one from ebay)- that's the only gadgety thing he's missing

with maybe a dvd of an encyclopaedia to go with it

zazen · 10/11/2008 10:03

Well it shows that your parents were also struggling to think of something to buy him! Bit cheeky though

Now, for your Ds pressie, I would get him a kite, and go at least once a month with him to fly it. Fly it in different places and look at a map and plan your trip - travel in different ways - car, bus, train, boat! that way the fun is HUGE, and it's fab quality time.

2point4kids · 10/11/2008 10:03

A compass and map reading thing? You could set up a treasure hunt for him to find his other [presents using it on Christmas day!

My DH is a big kid and he has a watch with a compass on it - something like that?

WowOoo · 10/11/2008 10:05

Have you looked at Science Museum website? there's loads of good stuff there.

I would just let them give him the camera. Why not? They were a bit cheeky but...(we have no parents or in-laws so I probably don't get it. Would love my ds to have grandparents to spoil him though. it's what they do, no?!!)

WowOoo · 10/11/2008 10:06

By the way LunarSea, do you know there's an awful Japanese band with your name spelt LunaSea. And now a secretly great song by them is stuck in my head. Fab!

SoupDragon · 10/11/2008 10:07

What Jux said.

TrinityWino · 10/11/2008 10:07

does sound spoilt
but they were out of order
give them the money for it and et them to buy a printer for it

DelGirl · 10/11/2008 10:11

Am I the only one that thinks, wow, thanks very much. Yes, I guess I might be a bit stuck for ideas but come on. dd is lucky if she gets something small from the charity shop from her gp so I think you should be just a little bit grateful

SoupDragon · 10/11/2008 10:13

Oh FGS, just because he has stuff doesn't mean his spoilt. Don't be so rude.

Greensleeves · 10/11/2008 10:15

Spoilt is an attitude, not a number of possessions! Uncalled-for IMO.

BCNS · 10/11/2008 10:16

oh we have this problem with both ex ILs and sil. but hey.. I alway have a back up plan.. and you can make this work to your dc's advantage.

In Hawkins they have.. pinhole photography set with everything you need and it's very sciency!!.. were getting this for DS2!!
here

also lots of other cool things like Owl puke to take apart!.. well worth a look IMO

DelGirl · 10/11/2008 10:16

sorry Lunarsea, my post shouldn't be directed at you as you don't actually sound annoyed by it, sorry

Greensleeves · 10/11/2008 10:22

this is for age 10+ but I'm thinking of getting it for my 6yo

BCNS · 10/11/2008 10:24

greensleeves.. that's a very nice site ( thank you I have book marked it )

Greensleeves · 10/11/2008 10:25
