Caran D'ache definitely . I think you can still get them. Have you tried an art shop?

Botbot · 08/11/2008 21:46

ooh, Caran D'Ache

My heart's desire when I was 10. Still have my tin of coloured pencils (most of them about 3cm long).

Botbot · 08/11/2008 21:47

I like them a bit less now I know they can't spell 'professionals', though

Botbot · 08/11/2008 21:48

this is actually giving me the horn.

kidsrus · 08/11/2008 21:51

british ones
thought you might mean the rexel cumberland water colours they were expensive and fab!

ThingOne · 08/11/2008 21:51

You can definitely still get them in tins. I bought some for my nephew a few years ago. I got a surprisingly good bargain which I still think must have been a mistake and he got twenty for virtually the same price at ten . At the local art shop.

VintageGardenia · 08/11/2008 21:52

They are truly gorgeous pencils, if she's arty, or not even arty but cares about her drawing, she'll just love em.

Other nice colouring pencils are Derwent. Not sure how prices will compare but [[http://www.pencils.co.uk/products/derwent.aspx?sid=15 these are their watercolour ones].

Eniddo · 08/11/2008 21:52

Eniddo · 08/11/2008 21:53

well she loves drawing

but she is only 6 so possibly wasted on her

but I don't want to buy her a huge pack of crappy ones

Derwent ones good too. And they've got a fairly entertaining if you're in the mood for it museum as well.

Am getting slightly obsessed with coloured pencils this evening.

VintageGardenia · 08/11/2008 21:54

If she loves drawing she'll love them and she may still be using them when she's ten.

My son is the world's greatest slob and not even into drawing and he keeps his pencils immaculately and graded in colours.

WH Smiths have lovely big tins of watercolour pencils on offer at the moment.

thumbwitch · 08/11/2008 21:56

I loved Caran d'Ache pencils

Blu · 08/11/2008 21:57

WH Smith had some lovely tins of crayoons half price recently.

DS has some caran'd'ache water soluble pastls (very expensive - well, about £10 for a small tin) but he loves them and manages to make his rtwork look quit sophisticated by brushing over it with a paintbrush and water.

MaryAnnSingleton · 08/11/2008 21:57

I loved them too !

Blu · 08/11/2008 21:58

x-posted with Janeite!

Eniddo · 08/11/2008 21:58

Have just remembered the enormous tin of 50 coloured pencils I got from Habitat, Christmas 1984 (was 13, so possibly a bit too old for them). No idea what happened to them, so am planning angry phonecall to mum tomorrow accusing her of sending them to jumble sale.

Eniddo · 08/11/2008 21:59

[ears prick up]

WH Smith you say?

I did really want to get caran dache just to live out childhood dream

(pencils join the list which includes pony and piano - there is a theme here)

The Derwent pencils are half-price at Hobbycraft at the moment - about 15 watercolour pencils and 6 drawing pencils.

Marina · 08/11/2008 22:03

Caran d'Ache are wonderful, but, enid, ds and dd use some fabulous pencils we got in France ALL THE TIME, and you can get them here. Virtually unbreakable leads, colour like a dream, triangular shape means they encourage good grip and do not roll off train tables etc
