Help I need inspiration, don't know what to get my 1 year old little girl for Christmas

Its her birthday on the 20th December too so its a lot to think about all at the same time. We've brought her one of those bounce & spin zeba's for her main birthday present but i'm really stuck what to get for her main Christmas pressie.

She's just started to walk and the toys she used to enjoy just seem to bore her very quickly now. Want to spend around £50 but I also need ideas around the £30 mark for grandparents.

Theres that much out there I'm a bit lost. Was considering getting a trike but I;ve read a few reviews saying their dangerous for little ones and its really put me off.

wheely bug
xylophone
candeloo eco night lights

Umlellala · 07/11/2008 21:43

little doll and pram/buggy

I'm thinking of buying a dolls house for my 1 yr old dd. Something I hope she can grow into. A doll and pushchair was another idea.

sorry x post!

A ride on car she can push herself around on, mine used those from an early age.

Trundle truck - we have a cool one with baby blocks which has a wheel and lights and sounds. It's bloody irritating actually but DD loved it at 1.

jellyjem · 07/11/2008 22:06

Thats for the suggestions. The wheeley bug looks brilliant

I know its a bit daft to spend loads on her as she already has stacks of toys and will get loads from other people but I just can't help myself, she's our first and will most likely be an only and I love buying her stuff.

how about one of the classic brio pull along toys. love the girafe

shadowsundertheeyes · 08/11/2008 08:57

We bought DS a trike for his first birthday and it's brilliant. You do have to keep an eye but he completely loves it. It tires him out too!

Also bear in mind that if she's just started walking that will be the most important thing for her brain to be practising now so toys that involve sitting etc may not be the thing for a while, but she may well return to them. DS just picked everything up and carried it round the house for a while when he started walking.

An ark is another good pressie for growing into as it has lots of play potential. A garage if you want something not girlie- DS loves putting things down the slide on his (rarely cars).

get something that she will grow into. my dd has birthday and christmas close together so i like to get her something she will use in the summer. equally when she was one i think i just bought her a really cheap doll.

woodstock3 · 08/11/2008 15:39

ds had a trike and it took ages to get the hang of which means you get a lot of value out of it! he still likes it now. or a doll\s pushchair to push? will come in v handy when she is at the stage of wanting to walk alongside you and the pushchair
or building bricks?

fin42 · 08/11/2008 22:44

I bought my son a click-clack caterpillar as one of his presents for his 1st birthday/Christmas (birthday christmas eve!)and he still gets it out now he's nearly 4.

fin42 · 08/11/2008 22:46

Sorry, should have added it's from ELC.

LittlePeanut · 08/11/2008 22:49

Defintely a ride on car. My MIL bought DD one for her first birthday, and she has played with it more than anything else.

And it was only a really cheap one.

She's now 2.9 and STILL occasionally plays with it. She has always liked the little compartment under the seat. Puts letters in there, then delivers them!

PotPourri · 08/11/2008 22:49

Get something with some staying power, that can be put away and then brought out again later and loved all over again. E.g duplo, dolls house (BIG bits though), dolls pram and doll. I can't stand lots of noisy plastic tat though, so a bit biased. I do have 3 under 4, and huge family, so am constantly fighting the clutter. I try to get as many people as possible ot put into their child trust funds - doesn't always work. And also try to get people to buy clothes or books or art stuff - things that will definately be used (and finished with at some point)

thumbwitch · 08/11/2008 22:51

I have a similar situation with my DS - he is 1 on 4th December - and I was thinking of getting him one of these - any thoughts?

LadyLaGore · 08/11/2008 22:51

get yourself something nice which comes in a big box.
give her the box.

1yos play with anything, you dont need to splash out. save it for when shes old enough to ask for everything under the sun

better still; get yourself a set of nice new saucepans and a wooden spoon and let her play drums on em when youre not using them. winner all round

pofaced · 08/11/2008 23:00

Absolutely second trundle truck & building bricks or cardboard box.... and I'm afraid I'd avoid that thing thumbwithch... it doesn't seem to facilitate a child exploring/ developing in any way.

fin42 · 08/11/2008 23:00

Thumbwitch- we bought this for our son on his 1st birthday and he only really used it at it's final stage (without the surround bit iykwim), first as a pushalong as a kind of aid to walking and then as a ride on. He screamed everytime we put him in it with the surround. Having said that he got loads of use out of it as a ride on as he was rarely off it until he was about 2.5yrs so we got our moneys worth and he loved to hide things in the lift up seat (i miss those days when we always knew where the remote was!).

thumbwitch · 08/11/2008 23:03

thanks fin42 - DS has just started walking (with assistance) so it might be about the right time for him to have it?

thumbwitch · 08/11/2008 23:04

pofaced - he already has building blocks and a cardboard box or several.

pofaced · 08/11/2008 23:25

But does he have trundle truck? it's walking aid, pram/ buggy, wheel barrow, pick up truck plus generl transporter... and that's before he sits in it and it becomes rocket/ car etc etc... honestly, my youngest is now almot 9 & the trundle truck was the star buy for all 3 of them for first few years (toy kitchen was also high on the list)

thumbwitch · 08/11/2008 23:31

I think that is what the trekker is for, pofaced. Somewhere at my Dad's house is my old wooden trundle truck - I will find it.
