HSM seems very popular with others in DD's class but I know absolutely nothing about it except I have always had the impression it was a bit old for her (she is 7 but sort of young for her age IYKWIM). She still plays with her teddies and stuff.

She says she doesnt like it but her opinion is based on knowing nothing whatsoever about it - just seeing bright garish bits of tat with HSM on them.

I would like to know a bit more about it - I wondered if I should introduce her to it by buying some DVDs for Xmas - if so which ones? Do you need to start with number 1 or can you skip them and still understand it all.
Or is there anything else worth having/knowing about it. Or should I continue to go along with the idea that we let the world of HSM pass us by.

She is having trouble with friendships and it occurred to me that perhaps she ought to know a bit about what all the other girls are into. I know my DS is always wanting to be in with the latest things his friends have.
Or is there anything else which 7 or 8 year old girls would be into instead.

For those who have read all this - thanks for any help!

Yes almost all girls of this age (and some boys) are very into HSM.

I hauled DD (now 7) up to speed with the zeitgeist this time last year by buying HSM 1 on DVD and also the soundtrack CD IIRC.

Those will still be available (pretty cheap now I guess ? try Amazon or play.com), as is HSM 2. Also CD available for HSM 2 and 3 (which is now on at the cinema).

It?s like Grease but without the rude bits so totally suitable for even small children IMHO and frankly not bad tho a little saccarhine. But good triumphs and people learn lessons along the way.

I would agree that if she knows about it, it will give her a jumping off point for chats with other girls. DD went to a party recently and almost every other girl was clad in HSM or Hannah Montana T-shirts and trews.

before buying anything, pop onto you tube, and search for it, there are lots of clips from hsm 1 & 2 which will help explain what it's all about. it is just like grease, boy meets girl and they all burst into song occasionally.

My D is in Y2 and seven just after xmas so similar age to your little girl. We had never heard of HSM when she started school, but lots of the little girls in her class were already obsessed with it. DD felt a bit out in the cold and I borrowed the first DVD and watched it with her, but she was too little and didn't get it at all. During October half term we went to the cinema with her two big brothers and as we were queuing up for tickets she decided that she wanted to see HSM 3 rather than City of Ember so we switched plans. (Didn't inflict it on the boys though!). She really enjoyed the third film - she must just be old enough to get it now.

I'm not a fan of disney merchandise or character clothing so she won't ever be getting anything like that. However I did pick up the DVD of the first two films for &7.50 delivered.
here

The third film isn't officially out on DVD yet so if you want to weigh things up at home I'd say this is probably the best purchase to make - as its hardly any cheaper to buy either the first or second film on their own. I ought to warn you that if your DD like mine is a bit young for her age/not used to being exposed to US culture etc you might have a bit of explaining to do about concepts like cheer leading, proms etc. Also IMHO the songs are dreadful, although DD would disagree.

Thanks everybody. I saw a double-DVD of HSM1 and HSM2 on sale locally so have just bought it - almost as cheap as the £7.50 link mysteryfairy (£10 but I had 10% off so was £9) so I went for it. I think I will see how she goes with that before any further investment. I think she is possibly just about okay to understand this sort of thing although I will def have to explain about cheerleading and stuff.

Half of me is hoping she will like it so she can join in with friends and the other half hopes she will say she doesnt like it so I dont have to listen to what I imagine is going to be bland stuff about lurvve in the USA.
Thanks again.

I have just bought HSM2 for DNiece aged 9, and am risking wrath of her mum who (I am pretty sure) doesn't approve. I looked at a couple of clips on the internet - brill how you can get all trailers now - and thought it was ok. Yes rather american, probably slightly mindless but fun in the way that fame was fun when I was that age.
