I have just booked a day trip to Lapland for myself and ds - haven't told him but I'm sooooo excited. Seriously - has anyone been on one of these? I know that snow clothes etc are provided there, but has anyone got recommendations of useful bits and pieces that I might need to take along with me please

Hi, I went on one around 6 years ago when my eldest two kids were about 6 and 9 and they had a fab time. Think we had to take our own gloves and hats but the suits provided were lovely and warm. You should double check whether they provide gloves etc but would recommend taking your own anyway. We had a great time on the snowmobiles and on husky and reindeer sleigh rides. We didn't take anything other than a camera and some money. enjoy

Hi I worked in Lapland as a snow ranger in 2005.
You are sooooooooooooo lucky, its so magical and amazing.
Make sure you take spare batteries (wrapped up warm) for the camera as the cold lowers it very quickly and you wont be able to get any pitures :-(
They say lots of thin layers (tights are very good) but make sure you dont get to hot and sweat before you get there as the sweat will freeze in the cold and make you even colder and numb!
Its very dark so Id say take a small torch.
Most places did have hats and gloves when u get the snow clothes but id say take some just incase.
Have they sent you a santa letter for ds to write?
If not write your own and pretend to send... when I was there the elfs take your letters and things then get to the cabin b4 you so santa already has letter, it makes it more personal.
Dont take to much tho as youl have to carry it all.
hope this help.
Have an amazing day im so jealous!!!!

who did you book through lollybee?

BabyTalk13 · 07/11/2008 10:54

Yes I want to know this aswell, I forgot to ask before???

lollybee · 08/11/2008 21:14

I booked the trip last week through First Choice - they have them on their website and do day trips or 3-4 day stays.
Thanks for those of you who have given me ideas ... didn't think about the batteries being affected by the cold ... Thanks

BRILLIANT - my dd is now 10 and still talks about it - she was 6 when we went! We did it via Canterbury Travel and it was totally awesome. Planning on doing it again next year when dd2 is 5. Can't wait!! Have a wonderful time.

I took my DD for the one day trip and she has never forgotten it. It cost £500 but it was 14 years ago and she was also 8 then. We did all the activities but the most amazing part was the Huskey ride through the trees in pitch black. We also hired a snowmobile and the headlights against the snow on the ground and trees was beautiful. It looked as if everything had been sprinkled with glitter. The site was a little disappointing till it got dark at 2.15. The fairy lights all came on and the pathways were lit with candles, it looked so Chrismassy. When I smell candle wax now the memories come flooding back. The one day was hectic but worth it. That by the way was our second attempt, the year before we were in the departure lounge waiting to go and the flight was cancelled due to the weather. The second time I managed to keep it a secret until we were on the plane. The air hostesses on the plane got all the children to sing Jingle bells as we were landing which made them so excited. I also wrote special cards to post at Santas post office.

I wrote this on the other thread. It was extremely cold, you must wrap up warm. We booked a meal for outside the camp fire but it was served on paper plates and DD was too cold to take her gloves off to eat it. I'm still not sure what it was. It tasted and looked as if it was covered in Chicken soup.We also could not go to the Lap ceremony as we were very cold at that point and decided on the hot chocolate instead. I bought my son a Lap style hat with the pointy bits and my daughter got a huskey dog. I also bought something for the Christmas tree to finish off the money. It was expensive but worth it.

They do eat alot of reindeer out there, we offered spaghetti but it was reindeer meet so if your not sure ask for veggie option. I dont eat meat apart from chicken so I never tried it but it was a massive hit with the other workers and customers so can imagine it was nice

We're going this year with Canterbury Travel. I've been out today and bought my thermals. Just trying to work out how many clothes it is physically possible to wear! How many layers did/will you get your children to wear?

lollybee · 11/11/2008 20:51

I had thought about thermal vest and long johns (bought mine the other day - didn't know that girls one are long janes!!), probably jogging bottoms would be warmest on the legs. I was then going for a long sleeved t-shirt and sweat shirt. Spare hat, gloves and scarf in case they get wet.
Friend of mine went a couple of years ago and said that the suits etc, that they give you are really warm.
They also got stranded out there and had to stay over for the night - hotel was brilliant so he says !! I'm thinking I might take a toothbrush and other essentials just in case.
