I have two friends who have got right into baking (cakes and other fabulous things) this year. I have a budget of about £15 each - can anyone think of anything that's pretty and useful? I have been prowling Lakeland but what the hell do I know (apart from the fact that a good friend always sticks around to sample the cake )?

a lovely cake stand!

those pretty coloured silicone utensils!

Tabbykat · 05/11/2008 08:31

Some really unusual biscuit cutters would be good - you could put them in a pretty tin to make it more special

bellavita · 05/11/2008 08:45

I saw this yesterday in BHS - looked lovely

FlirtyThirty · 05/11/2008 09:36

Silicon bakeware for me - or a nice cookery book.

mamainstripes · 05/11/2008 09:41

I second biscuit cutters. You can get some fantastic ones in ebay shops and then you could put them in a nice tin.

SugarGlider · 05/11/2008 12:49

I was wondering about silicone bakeware - looks fabulous... is it good to cook in?

And what do you make of this? A bit more expensive (and I thought a bit pricey) but praps good for the girlier of my friends: too naff?

silicon reusable cupcake thingamys are awesome.

TheMadHouse · 05/11/2008 12:53

I use silicon bakeware and it is fab. I would love anything to do with baking even the little toppers for the cakes etc

hazeyjane · 05/11/2008 12:57

silicon baking stuff is fantastic, I am after a brownie pan this Christmas (Had round cake pan last Christmas, and it is brilliant). I think that and some really good vanilla extract and muffin cases would be great and probably about £15.

ohdearwhatamess · 05/11/2008 13:05

Lovely cake tins (a set of 3).

NoblesseOblige · 05/11/2008 13:07

funky shaped silicon bakeware - if you look on soapmaking sites they quite often sell moulds that are actually silicon cake trays (and they say so as well!)

recipe book? i have mary berry's cake book. it;s fab! (the lemon drizzle cake is better than almost as good as Mars'!)

mamaspanx · 05/11/2008 13:10

this is a great website for all things cook orientated

headcook and bottle washer

AbbaFan · 05/11/2008 13:13

I love baking and spotted this yesterday, Cake Server

hazeyjane · 05/11/2008 13:15

silicon bakeware is made of silicon rubber, doesn't need greasing or lining and is really easy to turn cakes out of. It is also really easy to clean.

Have gone for biscuit cutters, because they are a bit cheaper, but found this fab silicone set on Amazon, down from £39 to £23, and eligible for free delivery: lustful sigh - and I don't even bake!

Mind you - I see they are part of a "Hell's Kitchen" range, which is a fair description of the typical Sugarglider family Christmas, but praps not in quite the right spirit...

Asda had the silicone cake cases reduced to £1!! They were only £2 to start with!! 12 in a pack.

I love that cake stand from BHS (might pop over there for a closer look!).

I bought a glass cake stand last year from Lidl for £10, it's lovely and everyone admires it when it's out on display (or maybe they're admiring the cakes on it!).

squeakypop · 05/11/2008 20:53

I think miniature baking trays are great (mini muffin trays, mini loaf pans etc) - great with kids and when you have to produce things for the school fete.

I love all the mini stuff you get at Pampered Chef.

littlestrawberry · 06/11/2008 04:57

Silicone bakeware or a really lovely set of cake tins.

I have thesegorgeous cake tins Even more beautiful in real life.

mymama · 06/11/2008 06:17

I love baking and I vote for silicon bakeware too. I have tons of the stuff but you can never have too much.

What about some lovely mixing bowls? I would love some new mixing bowls but dh doesn't take the hint.

Buda · 06/11/2008 06:26

That BHS cake stand is lovely.

I have those cake tins too littlestrawberry - I love mine. Carried them back from UK to Budapest last summer - got them in the shop at Dunster Castle in Somerset for half price! DH was at my excitement!

Luxmum · 06/11/2008 10:32

The Mary Berry cook book is FAB. ALL the cakes work, and the ultimate brownie recipe is the best ever. Can you track down some enamel baking trays which come with fitted plastic lids? You can bake brownies and traybakes in them, and then they stay fresh with the lid on, so you dont need to cut up and transfer the little cakes. I adore mine, and think they would be ever so handy. I got mine in Villeroy, but they seem to have stopped making them now..
