Advice on Lapland trip, please

DH and I are taking DS (6) and DD (3.5) to Lapland for a day just before Christmas. Could anyone who has already been tell me whether you think there is any benefit in taking your own ski clothing. Or are the suits that are supplied adequate? Any other tips gratefully received. Thanks.

Their suits are more than adequate. Wear layers of thin socks at least two . And if you choose thermal long johns.
Good gloves, they do not supply gloves (or do they I can't remember, but I am sure we wore our own gloves).A nice hat and scarf is good. Take a couple of small bottles of squash, dh and I shoved them down our jumpers and they didn't freeze (it was -35 when we went there) Camera was a throw away one, which also lived in my bra.

And have fun, we will go back if we can ever afford it.

MarmadukeScarlet · 01/11/2008 00:59

I was going to come on and ask the same thing! (hello again Mrs G, have followed you from the blue badge thread)

We are going for 5 days (Ds would not have coped with one long day, we need downtime) so my question is not so much about what to wear under a suit (I'm a ski tube and thermal longjohn girl) but more about the evenings/breakfasts etc.

We are staying in a cabin close (5 min walk?) to the hotel and go to hotel for meals. So at breakfast we will need to actually put clothes on under our ski suits as we will have to remove our suits inside.

MrsGhost · 01/11/2008 01:17

We wore Long Johns and clothes under our suits, and were toasty. It was the feet thing which I got wrong/right dp and dd wore layers of thick socks, whilst I wore dp's thick fishing socks (as well as his old fishing thermals) and my feet wasn't as toasty as theirs.
I would love to go back as we didn't take ds, I think we should off, and it would of been ok, but I was worried as he has Chronic Lung disease as well as CP, and lets face it Marmaduke were would we have parked?

MrsGhost · 01/11/2008 01:18

sorry dp and dd wore layers of THIN socks and there feet were toasty, whilst I wore one pair of thick socks and my feet were a bit cold.

AnotherFineMess · 01/11/2008 01:19

Oh . How lovely. Nothing else to report.

I do have to confess that I have bought ski stuff - I am a little sturdy at the mo and had nightmare scenarios in my head that the only suit to fit me would be a bright red one and everyone would think I was a tomato or FC!

I have also bought DS on as he wears nappies so need a 2 piece really and they only offer all in ones.

I got DD one so she didn't feel left out!

I got them all from TKMaxx - as I did the thermals. The DC will have them as their winter coats (FC usually brings those) and they were £20 each DC coat, less for the trousers.

My jacket was a last seasons colour of a make that retails for over £350 per coat, it was £40. It is dark as are the trousers I now look like a black pudding rather than a tomato.

swedishmum · 01/11/2008 13:06

I'm feeling the same as you MarmadukeScarlet - we're going for 3 nights and I don't want to end up in an emabarrassing suit! I'm also tall with very long arms so fit is a nightmare all round. I had a great snowboarding jacket but it was stolen while we were at the swimming baths. If I don't eat anything before we go my saloppettes should fit!
May have a little trip to TKMaxx...

emiliadaniel · 01/11/2008 13:23

Thanks everyone. I'm VERY worried about being cold (a year round problem for me) but I am getting quite excited now!

Me n my DH went before we had our DS , it was the best trip ive ever been on! You will love it, i promise and you kind of forget about the cold, (i am the colest person i know, and even i coped). Go on as many excursions as you can, even the ones you think you'll hate, do it coz they're all brill (and im not sporty!)

As for what to wear, layers as oppsoed to one thick jumper, i did: Bra, Strappy top, t.shirt, shirt, jumper, coat, hat, gloves, scarf etc and loads of thin socks, again layer it up. Dont worry, everyone looks huge.

God im sooooo jealous, would love to take DS when hes a bit older. You will have a great time. Tell us how you get on.

Oh and before you go, look at a website : www.levi.fi coz thats possibly where you'll be staying.

Oh and one final thing, watch out for the bears. Grizzlies. Seriously.

Have fun xxxx

ladypinky · 01/11/2008 22:30

We went last year thermals a few thin layers the company we went with were superb. The suits kept us toasty all day. They provided everything inc hats gloves.
Have an amazing time, we did!

MarmadukeScarlet · 03/11/2008 08:03

Ladypinky, out of interest who did you go with?

shhhh · 14/11/2008 20:22

can I bump this please...

I passed our travel agent today who was offering a day trip for £259 per, adult.

When I enquired they found the price had inc and the cheapest was £299..total for dh & i, dd&ds was £840......is this a good deal..? Ideally and it should have been £740 BUT obviously the places are slowly filling up.....

DH & I so want to go, dd is 3.6yrs and ds 22 months and we just thought it would be better for a day as we heard a few days may be a bit much esp for ds iykiwm.

Would you do this or not..? Noone seems to have a bad word to say about it and we sooooooooooo want to do it but £840 is still alot for a day iykiwm..yet we were going to do london for a few days around christmas...
any advice.? tia x

shhhh · 15/11/2008 11:35

bump...

swedishmum · 15/11/2008 15:21

I was put off the day trip as the flights are quite long. We went when nos 1, 2 and 3 were younger - youngest was just 3, and tbh I think was a bit young. I'm sure you'll have a great time if you go but don't necessarily expect your dcs to remember it. We're going again with dd3 this year (for 3 nights) - she'll be 5 in Jan, and from our previous experience feel it's about the right time for her.

shhhh · 15/11/2008 15:46

Hi,thanks for the reply. Well we booked it today as the travel agent have given us more discount..

I don't expect either to remember but just thought its a nice way of seeing santa this year and ideal esp as they are at a believing age iykiwm...

It will be a long day BUT from the reviews its worth it.

Just trying to sort ski wear...we are all inc BUT ds at 22 mths may be a little to small and we didn't want to risk him having nothing iykwim. What did you do about wrapping warm..? you and the lo's..?

did you take a bag..? what about a pram..? needed or a waste (or not used often..?)

myermay · 15/11/2008 15:52

Hi myermay Yes its me..! How things your end..? we bump into each other now and then .

Yes, I have booked.Only today We go 7th dec....and you..?
Im really excited. Not told the lo's yet as dd already ask's "is santa coming today" lol .
I thought maybe wait till we are at the airport and then its only hours till she see's him .

Just now panicing about ds's outfit and what we should/'n't take..typical [win]

myermay · 16/11/2008 14:33

hiya, yes we are the same not telling the kids until the day before ! very exciting stuff - we are going for 2 days mid december.

A friend of mine who skis regualarly said to take a couple of pairs of thermal socks, hats that cover their ears and sides of face and i've seen some thermal long sleeve vests and long johns from sainsburys. Apparently it's all about the layering! so i was thinking undies, thermals then jeans or joggers, and long sleeve tshirt and then fleecy hoodie & then their snow suits. Also wooly gloves under their snow gloves. Also sunglasses for us. Also extra batteries for camera wrapped up as they drain quicker in the cold. Very excited about it. Have a great time, you go before us so make sure you either CAT me or reply on here to let me know what it was like and give me some tips.

Have fun

myermay · 16/11/2008 14:35

Shhh i wouldn't bother with the pram tbh, i doubt you'll be able to go anywhere with it because of the snow

shhhh · 16/11/2008 14:58

We are on the lookout now for a new camera..dh wants to take this as a chance to buy a new camera and video .
Thanks for the battery tip.

Re clothing, im thinking along the same lines. Just been to tk maxx and bought ds and dd sallopettes and hopefully the coats they have now should be fine with layers underneath..also got them thermal/waterproof mitts etc. and me a pair .

Getting quite excited. Bought the stuff on the basis that I guess I could sell on after...

Of course I will let you know how it was . Im sooo excited....
Your dd (i thinkg it was a dd..)is the same age as dd did you also have one older..?

myermay · 16/11/2008 15:02

i have 2 ds's 6 & 3.5 - and very broody for number 3, ds2 is just growing up so fast, i just NEED one more baby!!!

Will take a look over at TK Maxx this week. What are sallopettes, excuse my ignorance!

shhhh · 16/11/2008 15:20

completly wrong sorry...
I know what you mean, ds is 21 months and im also wanting a 3rd BUT decided to wait till next year before we start again..ds was very ill from birth and even now is high maintenance at times and guess its made me more wary....

You going to try for a 3rd..?

lol at sallopette..! I only found out what they were yesterday .
I guess they go over the lo's trousers and are water proof/snow proof and some have braces that keep them up.
Very cute looking Think thats one reason why I bought them
will find a link...

here

myermay · 16/11/2008 15:26

ah thanks for that.

i've been nagging dh for number 3 for the past 18 months - he's very stuborn!! however, we seem to have had a bit of a break though, i'm not talking about it anymoe, and he's not being as careful iykwim, so fingers crossed nature will take it's cause soon!! i'm very excited. I've always wanted 3 kids, and for some reason seem more excited this time, i think it's because i know that it'll be my last.

I don't blame you for waiting a bit, your ds is still very young. What's been wrong with his health then?
