Has anyone bought this magazine for their kids ?? I was wondering whether it was any good and what age it was aimed at ?

I was thinking of getting a subscription for my 5 year old DS.

I saw on the American website they do 2 versions - the one that can be bought in the UK and another version aimed at younger children. I can't seem to find anything about this younger version on the UK Website.

Many Thanks !

You can get it for about £8 with tesco clubcard deals. It is FAB, my dds pore over it, they are a little older than your ds.
There is also another nature deal on the clubcard deals website, woodland trust. Its a years membership for about £5 and is maybe nearer your ds's age. (magazine, stickers, leaf hunt etc)

woodland trust

ng kids

We have it for ds aged 7 (but a very advanced reader). He loves it. We got it through tesco. The woodland trust nature detectives does not have a magazine as such - though it is good fun.

Have you thought of these? We have had both the adventure box and the discovery box. Both great. Discovery box is like national geographic for kids, but with no ads and more glossy.

what a great idea! Thanks for that guys, my sister now knows what she's buying DS for christmas!

mckenzie · 30/10/2008 16:49

I like the look of those too IlanaK. They're quite a bit more expensive though - do you think they are worth it?

TheFallenMadonna · 30/10/2008 16:51

DS is 7 and loves it. I think it might be a bit much for a 5 year old.

IlanaK · 30/10/2008 17:06

I agree, they are expensive, but they are good.

mckenzie · 30/10/2008 17:07

I was thinking of the Story Box one for DD, 4 in March. Hva eyou seen that on at all IlanaK?

IlanaK · 30/10/2008 17:09

I have seen one issue of it. It is nice, but not an information magazine. It is a story designed to be read to the child. My son was much more into information books and such like so it would not have been any good for us.

I have the 8yo in question and a 5yo - it is fantastic for the 8yo and there is no way that my already reading 5yo would manage it or take as much pleasure in the activities.

ja9 · 31/10/2008 21:14

i looked at it this week in a shop. looks fantastic, but way beyond 5 yo.

ChasingSquirrels · 31/10/2008 21:16

my just 6yo ds had been having NG Kids for a few months (cludcard sub). He really enjoys it and it is a good read. I would definately recommend it.

Yurtgirl · 31/10/2008 21:23

I looked at NG kids but decided against it as although some of it would interest my ds a lot of it seemed to be about stuff he knows nothing of, also lots of advertising

The RSPBkids club is much better imo - obviously an interest in birds helps but it has stuff about insects trees etc as well.

Also it means you are donating £15 to the rspb which is a good thing I reckon

My nearly 6 year old DS is a big fan of the NG Kids magazine. He is a very good reader and can read it all for himself but I would still buy it for the factual content even if he needed to have it read to him.
