I have honestly never thought of doing this before but my mum mentioned it the other day she gives the window cleaner, wheelie bin cleaner bin nen.

Do you do any of these and how much would you tip or what would you give?

Also regarding nursery staff do you give them a gift?

I must sound reallu dim here but honetly never crossed my mind before

cherryliquormonster · 24/10/2008 16:32

i wilgive a couple of quid to the papergirl, and a box of chocs to the nursery staff and do up little hampers for the boys teachers but thats it. dont have a cleaner (i bloody wish i did) as cant afford it, dont even think there is a milkman near me and diff postie every week.

littlestrawberry · 24/10/2008 19:18

I give the window cleaner a bit extra.

Always make gifts for teachers, last year made chutneys and cookies, this year will be small christmas cakes.

I must be quite mean really, its never occured to me to tip the postie or binmen

SolosWhompingWillow · 27/10/2008 15:48

Where does this end?!

HappyMummyOfOne · 27/10/2008 15:52

SWW, tipping or buying gifts is personal - nobody forces you to do it. Some people like to show their appreciation - dont make them feel like they are bad for doing this or doing something wrong.

The op asked for people gave xmas tips too, not if people agreed or not.

I give dd's preschool trachers small gift (this year will be gingerbread stars 'decorated' by dd1!!)

Normally dont bother with anyone else but have had a lovely postie since Easter and if he sees me popping out to collect dd1 from preschool and he has a signed for/large parcel he'll loiter about as he knows I'll be back in 10 minutes (plus he plays along when dd1 asks him where jess the cat is etc etc) so may give him some money, bottle of wine or make him some biscuits this year

Cheesesarnie · 27/10/2008 15:55

i dont.im tight all year round.

TeeBee · 27/10/2008 15:56

I will definately be tipping my postie. If I am out he always sign's for my parcels then just hides them where no-one will find them. He also looks around the village to find me to let me know. Not sure what to give him though!

Bin men can f* off. Miserable buggers who won't lift a finger unless you call up the office to make them do so.

lal123 · 27/10/2008 16:01

another meanie here who has never even dreamt of tipping the postman or the binman (we don't post all the other council/ private workers who work for us all year???)

geraldinetheluckygoat · 27/10/2008 16:10

OUr bin men are so so lovely! The driver opens the door to the truck to wave at the ds's who are always at the window in awe when they came, and all the bin men wave and some even do funny faces and dance for the ds's!!! I always give them a box of beer.
Will make nursery ladies chocs too !

Our postie Dave is fab, so I put a fiver in a card for him at Christmas. He really goes out of his way for us.

Teachers/TAs/nursery staff get a little pressie (chocs, biscuits or a smelly candle) but not a cash tip.

lindseyfox · 27/10/2008 17:25

when i was a teenager and did an eve paperound where i did have to collect the peoples money for the paper i used to get tips at xmas (use to get a total of £2 a week from 50houses normally when collecting the money weekly)

but at xmas people tipped me between £1 and £5 and usually got £100 in total from 50 houses a couple of houses used to buy me a small present.

most felt sorry for me i think in the dark and wet!!

MegGriffin · 27/10/2008 18:40

Last year I got pressies for teachers and Ta's. This year I will also buy for Brown Owl etc who actually do give up their own time to give DD a fab time at Brownies and deserve a nice treat.

LostProphet · 27/10/2008 18:42

the people at the sorting office. I am in there a lot

Oh, and you should always tip a cloth nappy advisor.

colander · 27/10/2008 18:48

always the bin men because they are friendly, and I wouldn't want to do their job. I usually chuck £10 in a card and try and catch them. My mum puts it all in £1 coins so they can split it between them!

Teachers / nursery staff and TAs

MrsGhoulofGhostbourne · 27/10/2008 19:03

Have always previously given to bin men, but this year collections only every other week, so sod 'em.

lizziemun · 27/10/2008 19:05

I give the milkman, the paperboy if we get our paper most weeks.

Last year the dustman had my wheelie bin and i had to wait until the end of jan for a new one.
