Just interested, as my dh and I buy for each other and other grown ups as we think that our dcs shouldn't think they are the centre of the entire universe and that daddy loves mummy too, etc. No plans to criticise anyone, just curious.

because other wise it gets too expensive - and you just end up giving people more stuff for their carboots next year

LadyOfRoffle · 21/10/2008 21:09

Because of St. Nicholas... sorry feeding someone wil tell you more

stroppyknickers · 21/10/2008 21:10

FAQ - maybe it could just be for the adults then...'no, no, ds, you can join in when you earn some money'...am I on to something here? !

I know there is something behind the original xmas story about children ect but i totally agree with you, i can't stang miserable adults who whinge about xmas and say it's just for kids. We are all planning to have a blast at my house with EVERYONE joining in old and young.

conkertree · 21/10/2008 21:13

i love christmas - no way is it just for the kids in our houe. we dont get for every adult we know but we do for family, and then for friends who dont have kids, and they give to our ds - friends that do we tend to just give the kids but arrange a night out another time for the adults.

MrsMattie · 21/10/2008 21:13

Xmas is expensive. I don't want people buying me loads of tat just because they feel they have to. Nobody in my family wants or needs another '3 for 2' giftset from me, either . And me and DH buy each other little gifts all year round and make a special effort on birthdays.

ReallyspookyBCNSgrrrrr · 21/10/2008 21:14

we do just the dc's.. pressy wise.. but we enjoy them doing the whole pressy things.. and we get busy with them and really enjoy the food bit and the whole atmosphere.

S1ur · 21/10/2008 21:15

Think a celebration of that magnitude is for everyone.

However that translates, whether its because adults get to eat delish food and drink too much and stay up late(r) or because children get to eat delish chocolate, drink too much ginger ale and stay up late...... either way everyone has a good time.

presents irrelevant in this sense, that is just down to money and custom.

stroppyknickers · 21/10/2008 21:17

not just the presents tho' - so many people keep wittering that it is just for the children etc. I loved one christmas I had sans dcs - alchohol, creme brulee, my best friend etc.

hecAteTheirBrains · 21/10/2008 21:18

Is it? Sod that. It's my christmas too!!!

GodzillasGhastlyPutridBumcheek · 21/10/2008 21:20

Depends what cash you have and what family/friends you have around you i think. In our house Christmas is for kids, but that's cuz i'm a friendless joyless miserable git.

MrsMattie · 21/10/2008 21:22

Oh no, presents aside - it's not 'just for the children' in my books! I love Christmas. It's about family, friends, food, booze, relaxation and fun.

lucysmam · 21/10/2008 21:23

Maybe because for kids it's about playing all day and enjoying their toys or chocolate or whatever they get? For us, we still have to do the cooking & be somewhat 'in control' of our families, even if for one day we don't have a strict routine?

Although, on the flip side of the coin, for the first time in 3 years, I am looking forward to Xmas as much for myself as for the lo and my oh. I have a new found enthusiasm for just wandering round the late night shops with my oh & can't wait for the big tree to go up in town & Santa to come round on his float with carols and christmas songs blaring out!

PsychoAxeMurdererMum · 21/10/2008 21:30

I buy for the adults too.

I like presents damn it!!

expatinscotland · 21/10/2008 21:36

Definitely not just for the kids!

Kids get so much crap at Xmas anyhow.

And there are so many really good adult pressies out there for around the £10-£15 mark that aren't 3 for 2 toiletries or pants and socks.

Use your imagination, folks! Think about what the recipient would like - a MAC lipstick? The shower gel to go with the perfume you know their husband is getting them? A Clinque eyeshadow? Tweezerman tweezers? A Chanel nail varnish? Bourjois sparkly bronzy powder? That cool mascara that's a normal colour on one side and a sparkly on the other? Shisheido eyelash curlers? A top up card for his mobile?

What adult doesn't like a choice bag of tea or coffee? A voucher for some music for their iPod? A voucher for a book?

GodzillasGhastlyPutridBumcheek · 21/10/2008 21:43

Ok i have actually remembered things about last Christmas and am not such a miserable git

At least get on with most of my family, most of the time, and although the lack of alcohol is a bit depressing, there are usually some nice presents, and Christmas Dinner (which DH cooks - so much better than i can), and Christmas Cake, which is my fave.

And there's the whole build up thing going for it - although i can't afford to buy for anyone except nuclear family this year. And decorating the tree. And of course the kids seeing the decorations (especially DD3) and opening the presents i spent so long choosing. And sneaking into the twins' room at 5am to see if they're awake yet

compo · 21/10/2008 21:46

me and dh always get each other pressies
it's our only romantic thing tbh
dh likes toys, no, not boy toys, actually toys - transformers, comics, star wars lego, it is hard explainging why him and ds get the same stuff

lucysmam · 21/10/2008 22:08

compo, my oh wants a boy, so he has an excuse to get actual toys too! He has dreams about a big 'play room' with a scalextrix & light sabres etc etc etc

mumeeee · 21/10/2008 23:11

Christmas isn't just for kids. Dh and I always buy for each other. Also our children always buy presents for us and each other,

stroppyknickers · 22/10/2008 08:25

expat - I'll be your friend this christmas...I love your list!

OP posts:
ChopsTheDuck · 22/10/2008 08:44

because we are grown up and we buy things as and when we want them! We don't need presents for the sake of it on xmas day.

I think my fun is in seeing the kids' faces on Xmas day and having a the family time.

pinkblossom · 22/10/2008 09:26

Agree ChopsTheDuck. Generally if I want something throughout the year, I will buy it. Christmas is a massive celebration apart from giving of presents.
