does anyone only spend £10 or less on their siblings WITHOUT children?

loads of people i know only spend this amount on their siblings but they all have their own children aswell. i can't help thinking as they buy for both me and ds i should spend a bit more. my present to them last year looked rather measly in comparison.

My brother and sister dont have kids and they buy for us and our 2 dc,s which is lovely but like you we only spend £10-£15 on them each as with 2 kids we have enough to buy at xmas. Sometimes like you i feel bad too.

whoops · 20/10/2008 13:16

I have 1 brother without children and I spend a small amount on him but we don't buy for other siblings just my neices

sammybeth · 20/10/2008 13:16

Once they have kids we wont buy for them just their kids though as thats the rule in our family.

nappyaddict · 20/10/2008 13:24

whoops how much do you spend?

Hmm, see, my sibling and I still exchange gifts.

Why not? The whole 'only for the kids' thing escapes us. There's only us two and we like gifts .

We usually buy each other one item we've been wanting, but it can't be something you need.

This year, it's a magazine subscription.

Back when we both had no kids, man, the sky was the limit! Those were the days.

whoops · 20/10/2008 13:34

no more than £10! In fact I think the last couple of years I have got him something with my commission from chocolate parties
I am one of 4 and have 5 (this year will have 6) neices so when I have spent £5-10 on each of them plus my kids grandparents etc and our brother usually says not to get him anything I tend to just get him a token something

norksinmywaistband · 20/10/2008 13:42

I agree Expat its nice to do gifts for siblings. We agree that no gifts to be bought for siblings as we all have dc. However homemade, freeebies and freecycle all acceptable.

So have made some chutneys, and will do some truffles for each,And have been looking out for freebies etc.
Argos were brill bought the kids some pressies and got a voucher back so could get some bits"for free"

The fun is in seeing how inventive we have all been

MamaG · 20/10/2008 14:03

Agree expat

I have one sister who doesn't have children, so I buy for her and she buys for me and my DC I'd be upset if she didn't buy for me and fully intend to keep buying for her when she has children

nappyaddict · 20/10/2008 14:04

Mama - do you spend much?

OP posts:
MamaG · 20/10/2008 14:06

I spend about £30 on her and tell her to keep MY present under a tenner as she spoils my DC (her only neice/nephew).

But nappyaddict, I don't want to sound patronising, I can afford to spend about £30 on her, if I couldn't and spent a tenner she wouldn't bat an eyelid. Hope that doesn't come across wrongly

Cheeseandseveredfingersarnie · 20/10/2008 14:06

we do £10 each but that could mean-

my sisters who dont have children /partner get £10ish worth
my sisters/sil/bil that are married with no dc get £10 between them
sister/bil and theyre partners that have dc get £10ish between them
then theyre dc get £10 each

sure theyres easier way of saying all that lol

nappyaddict · 20/10/2008 14:11

so basically it's £10 whether they've got a partner or not?

When my sis has children, I'll spend less onher and more on her DC IYKWIM

expatinscotland · 20/10/2008 14:13

i think it's fun because our rule is it can't be something you need.

it has to be frivolous - a shower gel to go with the perfume i know her husband's getting her, a MAC lipstick, a charm for her charm bracelet, something like that.

expatinscotland · 20/10/2008 14:16

but i wouldn't give her nothing just because i have kids and she doesn't. she had kids years before i did.

just never crossed my mind to give her nothing.

she's my sister, we had so much fun at Xmas growing up, she loves presents and i do, too.

lots of stuff for around a tenner to get - a pair of Tweezerman tweezers, a Shisheido eyelash curler, a Clinique eyeshadow,

stroppyknickers · 20/10/2008 14:17

Thought I was the only one who didn't buy into the only for the children thing. Phew. I was actually v gutted when sil suggested not doing adults last year... We do grown up friends as well.

colacubes · 20/10/2008 14:18

I have never bought my siblings presents except big birthdays, 18 21 30 etc, I have one nephew who I buy presents for but this is not in placement of his dads its just for him. Oh but I do have one brother who is always skint, so I usually drop him a tenner at christmas so he can have a drink, but thats because he is skint, once he is a millionaire it will stop!

But my dp would buy his siblings ridiculously expensic=ve gifts, infact he spent more time energy and money on theirs than he did on mine, he has stopped it now though, they never bought me or my ds anything, so he got pissed off and dropped their pressies!

MamaG · 20/10/2008 14:20

FWIW I'd rather my sis spent £10 on something she knew I'd love, like a clinique eyeshadow/the other stuff on expat's list than £30 on a 3 for 2 smellies set from boots! If you put thought into presents, thats worth far more than the actual ££

expatinscotland · 20/10/2008 14:20

my best friend and i still exchange an album we have on our amazon list.

her daughter's grown and she's a grandmother, but that doesn't mean she stopped liking pressies .
