Hiya I was reading on a thread further down (but can't find it now!) about including the recipe with a bottle of wine as a gift and was wondering if you could share what you need.

Thank you

I put in a sachet some golden granulated sugar (about 5-6 tbsp), some cloves, a little ground ginger, some grated nutmeg and a cinnamon stick. Then I put in instructions to add a sliced orange.

Thank you, sorry to ask do you know the method of making it all the recipes I find are different..

All I do is warm the wine through, add all the extras, stir until sugar dissolved - then simmer it according to how much alcohol you want cooked off! You can also choose to strain it or serve it with all of the bits.

Bottle of red wine, half-pint water, 2oz sugar (more or less to taste), one cinnamon stick, 5 cloves.

Heat up to simmering point - don't let it boil. Garnish with orange and lemon slices.

Thank you everyone, another to add to my list of home made pressies this year!

zippee, just out of interest, what home made pressies are you making as I'm making some but not very original I don't think

zippee · 11/10/2008 21:47

Hi lucysmam, I'm just doing the usual
Christmas Cake / Pudding
Truffles
Mince Pies
Maybe Peppermint creams
Maybe a photo calender (bit of a cheat using photobox 2for1 offer for grandparents)
All put in a Canvas bag which the kids will draw a piccie one...

what sort of wine is best to use for mulled wine. I know its a red one but thats about it?

beautifuldays · 11/10/2008 23:04

i was thinking of doing this for a few gifts but never made mulled wine before. does anyone know how long does mulled wine keep? or do you need to drink it straightaway?

lucysmam · 12/10/2008 09:51

shelly, I'm just getting a couple of those small bottles you can get for about £1.50 from Tesco for my dad and sister. Have no idea which would actually do the best job but they've never complained yet

zippee, thanks, I'll stick with what I've got in that case. . . . cakes, mulled wine, calendar with family pics or pic frame, mugs for mulled wine, biccies & maybe something else.

If you make it up beautifuldays I think it has to be drunk whilst warm ish, never a problem for my lot though tbh. No idea if it keeps, sorry

SqueakyPop · 12/10/2008 10:07

It keeps well. We usually drink what we make, but if we do have leftovers, they can be bottled up and put in the fridge. It gets reheated again, so no worries about germs.

If it is going to sit for a while, it's a good idea to take out the spices once they have reached the right level.

shelleylou · 12/10/2008 11:24

thanks lucysmam, i know my parents have got a couple of bottles of it in but may take round a bit of what i make taste the difference so to speak. Im going to experiment this year with things like that never have before
