as i think dd1 would really like one. she keeps taking mine and dh ipods and listening to them. she is really getting into music atm.

i think a shuffle is pretty much the way to go, easy to use, can be clipped onto clothes etc etc.

dh says just get her a cheaper mp3 player. which i would do, but the ones i had were also such a faff to use.

....I bought four iPod nanos (1st generation, but hey) for the urchins from ebay, total cost 80 quid. Two of them were even boxed and seemed new and unused....

Dd(8) will be getting a nano for Xmas. She has my old one & has taken good care of it but it has to be charged way too often. That will be her "big" pressie. Fortunately ds is only 5 so isn't interested in ipods or other expensive stuff!

SimpleAsABC · 11/10/2008 14:10

Haven't read whole thread but on ipods which have a display you can set AND LOCK a volume limit.

Problem solved re delicate little ears.

bubblerock · 11/10/2008 14:19

I bought one of THESE - works out at approx £6 for 1GB and £10 for 2GB. Postage was quick and the MP3 player is really cute!

I don't buy anything expensive for my 10 year old - he's so clumsy!!

ds1 got a nano for his 9th birthday, he is very much into his music and he has lots of audio stories on there (such as the harry potter series etc) which keeps him entertained in the car on long journeys. it isnt loud as the volume can be fixed, he also has the docking station in his bedroom for it. he hasnt lost it or damaged it, but then he's not allowed to take it to school or round his friends.

dp is more likely to misplace his and will hunt high and low for it until i search his coat

people give their children mobile phones nowdays, some of which they can play music through anyway, and some are younger than 9!

Eniddo · 11/10/2008 16:31

mine has one

the shuffle

it is irritating though as you can't choose what you want to listen to

I may get her a new one for xmas

LollipopViolet · 12/10/2008 14:47

I found ipods to be the best players I ever used. I have a Touch now, and adore it. As has been said you can set a volume limit, and I'm certain a 9yo is old enough to sit down with and say "these are the rules for using it." So you could say "you can't take it to school, and we have full control over volume limit" or something.

My dd got the new little i-pod shuffle for her 8th birthday last week. It is really cute - teeny tiny and hot pink. £32 from John Lewis. They do blue and green as well I think. It can clip onto your clothes. We have just had a 2 hour car journey and she was entertained all the way, singing along to HSM, Hairspray and Joseph. She doesn't turn it up loud because she's not stupid and knows what is a comfortable volume for her.

linzs · 13/10/2008 13:44

IL's bought my DD one for Xmas last year (age 8) and we are ordering one for DS (10) for his bday in a couple of weeks.

We have 3 DC and have found car journeys to be alot less stressful when they are listening to their own music.

If you order online through the apple store they will engrave for you free of charge - Thought this was a great way of identifying if lost and looks good too!!

fortyplus · 13/10/2008 22:11

A sensible adult would buy themselves a different make. But iPod is the brand children want to say that they own. If you bought her a different brand she'd probably be disappointed - you can't tell a 9 year old that something else from the Argos catalogue is better value for money.

No - misdee - your family has been through such a lot - spoil her and buy her the iPod!

Lovesdogsandcats · 15/10/2008 19:10

God I loathe ipods. Hate the way you cannot put music on them from any application other than bloody itunes.
I much prefer the Creative Zens.

chapeloffearstickchick · 15/10/2008 19:12

my ds3 got his when he was 7 -theyre great little things BUT be careful i almost washed it.

BetteNoire · 15/10/2008 19:17

ipod - yes
shuffle - no, as you can't download audio stories onto it.
DS1 got awfully confused about the story line of the Harry Potter stories.
The lack of display is annoying.

chapeloffearstickchick · 15/10/2008 19:22

loves cts and dogs .....my ds's put tunes on from random sites using media monkey

Tidey · 15/10/2008 19:24

I have the old 512mb version of the iPod shuffle. It fits about 120 songs on it, would that be enough space for a 9 year old? I just delete a few songs when I get fed up of them and add some new ones. You can get them for about £15 on eBay.

Flamesparrow · 15/10/2008 19:24

why can't you listen to stories?

BetteNoire · 15/10/2008 20:06

You can, Flame, but it shuffles the chapter order.

CatMandu · 15/10/2008 20:13

DD1 9 got a nano last christmas, a shuffle isn't great as others have said because of the lack of display. She has looked after it and it has the volume lock on it. We have all our music stored on our Mac and she's got a wide rang eof taste and often trys albums. We also download some great podcasts for her and some video ones too. Father christmas also gave her a £15 i-tunes card which she used to download some video episodes of her favourite tv programs. They are good for entertaining her during long car journeys.

Flamesparrow · 15/10/2008 20:19

you can turn off the shuffle function though... (or you can on mine anyway)

Flamesparrow · 15/10/2008 20:20

I love my little shuffle though It is small enough to fit in any pocket, and it does just what I want it to do - play music.
