don't want any of them to know what they're getting this year...want it to be a total surprise....so,how do i buy bikes and helmets to match their size?...Or do i just buy "big" bikes which is what i've noticed some of their mates have..in other words, they'll last em years!!!! Don't want to take em to Halfords for measurements cos they'll guess and i'm adamant this year it's got to be a surprise...!

I think helmets tend to be pretty adjustable so not many sizes to choose from. And if you know how old they are and roughly how tall, any bike shop worth their salt should be able to advise.

princesspeahead · 07/10/2008 20:54

measure their inside legs (telling them you need it to buy them trousers online) and then halfords or wherever should be able to advise.

for hats, their ages should be a good indicator, unless you know they are particularly big headed (or pea headed )

how old are they? I am getting bikes for my ds1 and ds2 .. took ds2 (he is 2 1/2) to halfords to get him measured for bike and as i know how much bigger ds1 is (he is 3 1/2)they told me the best size to get for him. Also Halfords online does have a size indicator .. or grab a similarly sized child (one that you know obviously ) and get them measured!

LadySanders · 08/10/2008 14:16

halfords have a bike size guide in store based on height

RedOnHerBeheadedHead · 08/10/2008 14:17

measure their trouser leg (inside measurement) and tell them you are buying them hats online (measure their HC!) - but as princess said - its usually age you go by i think.

BirdyArms · 08/10/2008 14:18

Agree that you can buy hats by age - they are very adjustable

Hi, have been out buying a bike for dd this morning.

It seems a lot more complicated than it first appears! Going by Halfords age guide, a 5-7 would need a 16" bike. (dd will be 6 by christmas)and we were all for doing that, but went to a great independent shop this morning, and even though we had dd inside leg measurement, he pretty much wouldn't sell us a bike until dd had been into the shop and tried some out.

He said that when we came back, we should pretend we were buying a bike for ourselves and they would innocently ask dd if she wanted to try some out whilst she was waiting. He says they do this all the time. It depends on how old your kids are, as older ones will def be suspicious!

The thing is you can get different frame sizes, different types of frames and also each childs reach is different too,so the height of the wheels might be right but the handle bars might be too far away etc. At this shop they customise it, ie adjust the heights, move the seat forward or back etc at no extra charge.

Having said all that, you could get them to try out their friends bikes, and just see if they look about the right size.

Helemet wise, they are measured in cm. DD is 50cm, and it might be worth measuring as they do helemets which are eg.46-52cm, then 50-56cm, so you'd want the one they would be able to wear longest, so although the 46-52cm would fit dd, we'd get much more use out of the next size up,IYSWIM.

Knew nothing about bikes a week ago, so very possible some of the above is not entirely accurate.

Hope this helps.

yes...did all this about 3 years ago and they knew then that they were getting them.if i take em into a bike shop, they'll know straightaway!
Thanks everyone for the advice.
I'm sure there must be people who just by what they think.after all,you can buy them from Argos etc.can't you?
i think i'll measure them all+their heads and try and go by that.

Last year I took my dcs into Toys R us to buy stuff for other people and let them have a treat of 'playing' on the bikes, ride on cars etc. Then a few weeks later when I 'needed' to look at stuff in halfords I tookthem with me and as a 'treat' for being good then got to sit on the bikes. They had no idea as I did it in October and they'd forgotten all about those 2 shopping trips by Xmas.

My DC got bikes a couple of years ago. We knew months in advance they would be getting one so while we were at Toys r us, we let them climb on a few bikes without letting them know.

We worked out what size bike would suit them and ordered them online.
As for the helmets, they are a size range, so aslong as you know roughly the size of their head, you will be alright. The helmet also comes with some foam inserts to make it a better fit.
