What is your one UNUSUAL stocking filler that others maybe haven't thought of?

Inspired by the stocking filler thread I noticed that we all tend to put the same old crap gifts in but occasionally you come across something that no-one else seems to have thought of.

My tip is (and this is very popular with my DD and some friends DC): pieces of rough cut gems/crystals/quartz or polished gemstones.

A lot of places sell them from about £1 each upwards, you can also fill a little gift bag for a set price. It appeals to the sciencey types and the magpie-types that just like sparkly things

Whats your tip?

Last year DS1 and DD had carrots and potatoes in their stockings with some books.

Dd got a jar of polished pebbles from MIL for her birthday and she is always playing with them
Something I've just thought of - when on holiday in the summer, buy something little and memorable to remind you of where you went. Then pop it in the stocking

hana · 04/10/2008 21:19

have just bought dd a brownie doll - she started a few weeks ago.

I do that too marina - pick little things up through the year

and a new ornament

wasn't there a mumsnetter that bought a bag of fake jewels from somewhere a while back? have been trying to google for similar and not having any luck

expatinscotland · 04/10/2008 21:20

oh, we loved the Glowsticks!

angrypixie · 05/10/2008 08:19

I put a disposable camera in (Boots currently doing BOGOF) it keeps them busy through all the dull parts of the day and even my 3 year old got a few decent shots (and lots of arms/ears/floor etc)

Nbg · 05/10/2008 08:37

Disposable camera is a good idea.
That would make a lovely tradition and getting photos that your kids have taken every year on xmas day.
Lovely

Chocolate coins is a regular in this house but we never manage anything different or exciting.

I've also seen the gautemalan problem dolls in Oxfam.

Toothbrush - a must. Nappies for baby.

colacubes · 05/10/2008 11:12

We make our own ginger bread men, a great pressie to give and very cheap! Also my ds loves anything that makes him feel grown up, last year I gave him his own comb and hairdryer, can get a dryer for a few quid!

mumnosbest · 05/10/2008 11:31

Father Christmas brings a toothbrush and satsuma here too! Also chocolate coins and a puzzle to keep them busy when they wake up at the crack of dawn. Hawkins Bazzarre does some great stocking fillers. There's one in Leeds but I know they have a catalogue and are probably online too.

JackieNo · 05/10/2008 11:47

WHen I was little we always had a 'trick' in our stockings - particular favourites I remember were false (stick-on) warts, novelty false teeth and things like that .

yomellamoHelly · 05/10/2008 12:06

We always used to get a Mr Matey. Not sure how much they are mind.

cherryliquormonster · 05/10/2008 13:02

we used to get a matey too YH. cant do it for my kids though because dd1 has quite bad eczema

wonderstuff · 05/10/2008 17:16

We always have a chocolate Father Christmas too, satsuma at the bottom, father christmas at the top, its just not right if they aren't there!

NoblesseOblige · 05/10/2008 17:19

lush bubblebath bars - preferably sparkly!

snice · 05/10/2008 17:22

Whoopie cushion was the biggest ever sucess in our household-hours of entertainment all through lunch with the grandparents. They weren't so keen.

fartmeistergeneral · 05/10/2008 17:32

Hawkins Bazaar for bits and pieces. Got the boys jokes/tricks last time (about 3 each) - you know, little magic tricks. Also put comic, torch, novelty pens, squishy things etc.

brookeslay · 05/10/2008 17:32

I just found a be good soap made by the elfs ! also for boys and big boys ! an egg made from Soldiers.
