Can we try to keep this lighthearted as I know some people can pretty savage on this site.
I was on the bus earlier today and I overheard a conversation between 2 ladies about thier Christmas shopping they needed to get. One said she needed to get wrapping paper and another said she doesn’t wrap presents but uses gift bags instead, how it’s saves so much time etc. Now don’t get me wrong obviously everyone’s situation is different but for me gift bags are so anti climactic. For me opening presents isn’t even really about the actual present it’s the anticipation of what’s underneath the paper as your opening it. I couldn’t imagine giving my kids or anyone for that matter, an unwrapped gift. To watch kids faces opening thier present on birthdays or Christmas makes me feel excited for them, even if I know what’s under it.

People not letting thier kids help decorate the tree, this leaves a bitter taste, trust me, as someone whose dad would change the tree around after we went to bed and thought we never noticed. It’s actually a bit soul destroying.

I often see on social media people absolutely ripping into people about how much they do and don’t spend. Christmas isn’t a competition. You do what suits your family. You don’t have to break the bank but equally people should be free to spend whatever they want on thier friends and family. I’m not sorry my kids get more than thier friends. I work hard for my money. I’ll spend it how I want, on who I want.

Christmas cake-I don’t like it! Or pudding! Or trifle!

Just to tone down the negativity I love everything else!!

Christmas day TV is beyond shite.

Bar Wallace and Gromit.

I hate how commercially it's all over on Boxing day and adverts are all about the sales, exercise and holidays. And people are fed up of their tree.

Boxing day is for relaxing!

It’s annoying that in some areas, public transport doesn’t run on Boxing Day.

I hate gift bags. I have loads that build up and then I give them to my sister. Give me good old fashioned wrapping paper any day of the week. And I’m not just talking about Christmas, it applies to birthdays too.
The best bit about Christmas for me is the build up. Christmas Day for me is the most depressing day of the year. I prefer Christmas Eve. And I agree Boxing Day is for relaxing.

RaraRachael · Yesterday 23:34

If I lived on my own I wouldn't bother with anything special on Christmas Day.

JESSICAASHLEY · Yesterday 23:35

Christmas Day is over rated. You spend all December waiting in anticipation and then the actual day is always an anti climax.

I much prefer the build up and Christmas Eve.

Boxing Day is for eating leftovers, a walk and endless films. Can’t decide whether Christmas Eve or Boxing Day is my favourite!

“Xmas” instead of Christmas gives me the ick.

i am all for each to their own at Christmas, but feel sad for kids who’s parents don’t embrace the magic. Mine didn’t and I have gone the opposite with my own kids. I don’t mean in terms of spending. The other stuff - over the top decorations, fun traditions, surprises and so on. I think it’s my love language or something! life is so serious - I love giving in to festive season.

people who virtue signal by wanting to volunteer at Christmas when they do bugger all the rest of the year can fuck off.

Hopefulsalmon · Yesterday 23:38

Christmas is 12 days not one & Christmas Day is the start not the end. Picture advent calendars are better than chocolate ones. 'Luxury' crackers still contain crap gifts.

WhyDoesItAlways · Yesterday 23:43

Traditional Christmas dinner is rubbish. Turkey is the worst of all the meats and the whole shebang takes too much time and effort to cook.

Boxing Day has always been another Christmas Day for us, always brought up with 2 Christmas days (separated parents) and then when I grew up and had in-laws too, often 27th or another day around the 25th was another Christmas Day too. For me, it’s always been about the people rather than just the date.

Agree with this one too! Christmas Day is the worst day of the season. Christmas Eve is where it’s at and yes, Boxing Day is pretty good too.

I love this 😆 .
. Never diss the trifle tho

Totally agree that wrapping is important! I still remember the year I gave three gifts to the same person, all red-and-white, but each with different paper and different types of ribbons. So lovely.

However, I'm not in favor of people overspending on Christmas, especially on children, where there's a good chance they may outgrow or lose interest. I'm not sure it's good in the long run to have children brought up with the idea that they will naturally always have more than their peers. And I find particularly distasteful people spending money on infants who have no understanding of what's going on.

My personal unpopular opinion is my hatred for store starting Christmas displays in October.

All of it.
Waste of money, time, energy and ungrateful people, same crap every year.

Not sure this fits the OP’s brief of ‘keep it lighthearted’…

Christmas tv adverts that are not actually showing you anything you can buy (for example, what is the John Lewis ad actually advertising? A room full of tinsel?)
Christmas cake and Christmas pudding, dry turkey - yuck.
It's a very depressing and lonely day for all sorts of people and for all sorts of reasons.

I feel sad that Christmas starts and finishes so early. People put there tree up in November and take it down boxing day. What happened to the 12 days of Christmas?

Shops should be banned from Christmas displays until after bonfire night. Home bargains had Christmas stuff out in September

After 40 years of it none of it is popular anymore,so unpopular it has become.
Its not 2-3 months of christmas it's more like 6 months of christmas now.

100% this. I love Christmas I love the run up, but Christmas Day is over and instead of enjoying the festive period, we’re bombarded with messages about how guilty we should feel and we need to start getting ourselves prepped to diet and exercise

I'm terribly sorry, but as an American, I don't know what bonfire night is. I think once upon a time, it was traditionally the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S., i.e. the last week of November. I wish it could be December 1.
I just start to find myself enraged after being bombarded with Christmas for basically one-quarter of the year, and I've come to loathe almost every Christmas carol.

cornflakecrunchie · Today 00:29

@Kickinthenostalgia You may feel differently about Christmas gift bags as you get older & there are SO many pressies to wrap!
It really got me down last year until a netmum suggested gift bags, which is what I've done for this year. Apart from young kids, of course, still wrapped theirs!

My favourite Christmas experience? Probably the Christingle church service. :-)
