Help with present for 25 year old alternative DIL

I should start by saying I absolutely love this young women and I want to get her a really nice present - I have about £50-75. I like to choose gifts that are useful and enjoyed - I hate buying random tat. My DIL is an engineer, loves cars and motorsport, heavy metal music and dogs. She's not going to appreciate toiletries, candles, jewellry or anything 'girly'. I am completely stumped. Last year I bought a joint gift for both my DS and DIL for their new house but I'd like to choose something specifically for her this time. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I was going to say Lego but others have mentioned it. Even if she is not a girly girl, she must shower so give her a luxury shower set or a really nice Pj set, cosy slippers, chocolates or a nicer food hamper, books or a car model like this

Tools? But I’d never buy tools for someone without a steer, unless I know about tools myself.

Harrumphhhh · 30/10/2026 08:40

Oddballs undies or PJs?

Got to say my DS actually used to collect these cars - you're right on the money with him :)

There is a fabulous website which makes jewellery from famous guitarists strings the guitarwrist Artists – the guitarwrist https://share.google/fsE6WVgKWuMpXgeBX or, if yiu search Etsy for rock star pet portrait you will find fairly inexpensive sellers who will put her own dog (assuming she has one) into a reck pic, which would be nice with a voucher for somewhere you know she likes/buys concert tickets/Disturbia etc

WedsAgain · 30/10/2026 19:55

Alt Tickets do gift vouchers, also Ticketmaster and probably local venues.

And some cool records?

I am a fan of Nifty Things even if I have no use for them so never buy them. But I love to trawl https://www.reddit.com/r/EDC/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/VEDC/.

Also Victorinox. I want one of these https://www.victorinox.com/en-GB/search/product/?q=Card but have had one of these https://www.victorinox.com/en-GB/Products/Swiss-Army-Knife™-and-Tools/Trades-and-Crafts/Swiss-Tool-MX/p/3.0327.MN for more than 30 years. I had it for work and it now lives in my kitchen drawer. Every woman should have something useful like this that’s portable (and a good tool kit, just saying).

once you get past the guns and knives, there can be really interesting Nifty Things that I can drool over.

I now just ask my son (who appears to be married to the same woman as your son is!). That way, I don't waste money on stuff she doesn't want and she gets exactly what she wants. And then I add a few bits and pieces like a Starbucks gift card, her favourite snacks etc. and wrap it beautifully.

DH is a mechanical engineer, a petrol head - presents I've got have included a customised gear knob, a set of Veritas tools, Lego vehicles, a MIG welding course, a retro engineer's coat, a Japanese steel tool box, various t-shirts F1, music themed. Some of these might be of interest 🤔

Ask your DS to take photos of her make up and skincare products, look at getting some of those. Even the most un “girly” girls have their own preferences on these things. Your DIL sounds like my DNiece, full on metal head/goth/alternative, she’s very particular about what products and makeup she uses

Disturbia/ Killstar vouchers. I’d be made up with that!

She sounds a lot like my son’s wonderful girlfriend. In the past I’ve bought her things already on this thread. Oodie, stainless steel jewellery, Lego kits, complex puzzles, a Victorinox penknife .
This year steered by my son she’ll be getting a Japanese cooking knife for her collection and a lava lamp.
Im a bit spoiled though as she loves whisky so I am never truly stuck for an idea!

People, stop with the toiletry set suggestions.
I wear makeup maybe once a year. My shampoo is whatever is on offer in tesco when the current one runs low. I wash with a bar of soap that is pretty scent free, and use basic moisturizer. I dont want all the stuff the OP says her DiL doesn't want - and that involves toiletries, makeup, perfume, smelly candles, gloves etc etc etc

OP has got the hang of her DiL. Stop pushing her towards things you'd like because you cant understand others are different.

That’s you!

Being alternative, petrol metal head dose not preclude women from wearing makeup and using specific skincare. There is a big difference between buying any old girly toiletries set and buying what OPs DIL likes.

My DNiece who sounds a lot like OPs DIL loves make up, specific types, she’s also a vegetarian and will only use specific brands, she’s also gives a shit about her skin and hair especially taking care of her tattoos and ensuring she dosnt re damage her hair like she did when she was a teen. I also have a group of friends who are also very similar, again they still use makeup and skincare, actually far most expensive brands than I could ever afford.

@ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS yes, its me. But - vital for this thread - its exactly what the op says "She's not going to appreciate toiletries, candles, jewellry or anything 'girly'."

And as I said, buying generic toiletries is not the same as op finding out what actual products and cosmetics her DIL uses and buying those. It was a suggestion not an order.

Gosh don't.

If she isn't in to such things don't give her some as a gift.

A toilet brush would be as welcome as face creams to me.

Also with the luxury shower stuff- I get this, of course I shower but what a waste of money- I am perfectly happy with my supermarket own soap.
