26th December 2026 not a bank holiday

As title says because the official bank holiday has been moved to Monday 28th. How will this affect your plans? A close family member now has to work on the Saturday which means not being able to be with family on Christmas Day because of travel difficulties.

yet the trains are cancelled.

No trains at all between our cities on the 26! But running in the 28th

Yes, I will be working the Sat and Sun. It’s a normal working day if you work weekends, which I do.

That’s how it always is and if you work in retail normally no days off in December. My adult DC has worked four Christmas days in a row in retail.

I’m having to work Boxing Day now because the bank holiday is to be the Monday. It’s pants.

That's how it is in retail I guess. They'll get another day off

It’s not the same though!

I hate people who go shopping on the 26th - have they not bought enough?! If there was no demand then the shops wouldn’t open.

People can buy whatever they want whenever they want. Also boxing day sales

I think most retail workers would expect to have to work Boxing Day as that’s when the sales start?

Relatively few sales start on Boxing Day these days. Most people have better things to do!

Plenty of people work through the Xmas period not just retail. There are plenty of people working Xmas day itself. Perhaps think of those?

Completely get that sentiment, especially regarding those in the healthcare sector.

However (talking of myself here, retail management in the FMCG sector), the shops really do not need to be open on Boxing Day.

If I had it my way, I’d close at 5pm on Christmas Eve and then, at most, open for 4 hours on Boxing Day (so if you do need something urgently from the shops, you can nip out between 10am and 2pm, as an example).

It’s just unnecessary greed and overconsumption.

Yep, always been this way. I work in healthcare, so you'll actually get more unsocial hours uplift for working the 28th (paid at Sunday/bank holiday rate) than you will for working boxing day (Saturday rate) which makes absolutely no sense to me at all!
