Christmas and birthday gift ideas for daughter after a difficult year

DD is 23 and, unfortunately, has had a really awful year. She’s just lost her grandmother, is struggling quite badly with depression and anxiety, and has recently moved back home with me.

Her birthday is in December too, so I’m trying to come up with things that feel a bit special rather than just giving her money. I know if I give her an amount to spend herself, she’ll probably just leave it sitting in her account and not buy anything!

So far she’s asked for:

  • Smiski
  • Winnie the Pooh purse
  • Lego Winnie the Pooh
  • A vinyl and matching band hoodie

I’m thinking perhaps some little things she can open rather than one big present. Budget is reasonably flexible as it’s covering both birthday and Christmas, although obviously I don’t want to go completely mad.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but if she’s a Christmas person, you can get a Lego Christmas wreath

We also have various sets from the about:blank Lego Winter Village. I’m not as mad about Lego as my family, but I adore our winter village. I love building it each year and putting fairy lights inside the windows ❤️ . The products have now been retired, but am sure they would be on EBay. Could be something to build up year on year.

Sorry the link for the Winter Village range didn’t work: ttps://www.lego.com/en-gb/categories/adults-welcome/every-set-in-lego-winter-village-collection

I’ve been given various sets from the Lego botanical range recently which I loved https://www.lego.com/en-gb/themes/botanicals?cmp=KAC-INI-GOOGEU-GO-GB_GL-EN-RE-PS-BUY-CREATE-BOTANICALS-SHOP-BP-MM-ALL-CIDNA00000-THEME-BOTANICALS&ef_id=Cj0KCQjw8ofWBhCHARIsANBj4LtSIHButBIfQiuf_z_ZKPFqjH0FiDtMsSEP-dpVJ0nvyqUpfVMYtdIaArquEALw_wcB%3AG%3As&gad_campaignid=22027153425&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADESMXJ0-J9udXzBHZIJBJNGRUAlE&gclid=Cj0KCQjw8ofWBhCHARIsANBj4LtSIHButBIfQiuf_z_ZKPFqjH0FiDtMsSEP-dpVJ0nvyqUpfVMYtdIaArquEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&s_kwcid=AL%21933%213%21725751177593%21e%21%21g%21%21lego+botanicals%2122027153425%21174676792960

one of my best presents from my DS13 which he chose himself was some fluffy socks, chocolate, and an Amazon voucher to buy some books.

id also recommend a cosy throw, snuggly pyjamas, maybe an adult colouring book and felt tips, jigsaw puzzle?

Nearer to Christmas, Aldi’s gingerbread house is one of the best to make, really sturdy, yummy and comes with some cute little people.

What about some simple baking kits so it doesn’t involve too much thought or otero, she can just open and away she goes.

Lounge fly do lovely Winnie the Pooh bags and purses.

@ChristmasMad1 heated throws/blankets always seem to turn up on the bargain threads every year- worth a look/ask!

You can get gift vouchers for this site https://www.craftcourses.com/

I was given some as a present once and found two great courses not too far away. DH also booked me a different course through the same site.

You can search by type of craft and/ or location which is handy

Would she be open to some cosy colouring and fancy alcohol markers? I know it’s technically art materials, but it’s a bit more easily contained than paints etc and it’s very mindful and soothing.

My DD 19 was never madly into make up or anything but she utterly loved this athroplogie.advent.calender with lip gloss ,hair stuff and so on.
Obviously it's an advent calender but I gave it on Xmas day. She loved it.

Also she has changed her mind about driving but what about one trial drive thing.

UnderThePressure · 07/10/2026 19:46

Does her favourite band have a tour coming up? Maybe tickets to that?
Or if she collects vinyl, how about a good vinyl case to keep them safe? I can recommend Gorilla cases, you can get the 12" version for about £30 on eBay.

I knowmfor birthday and Christmas you'd probably want something nicer than home bargains but these winnie the pooh pyjamas are so lovely the quality is gorgeous and they're not like the modern kind of pyjamas.

Sorry, kids hanging off me whilst I type.

*I know for

  • Not the modern Winnie the pooh

How about a winnie the pooh fleece blanket? Both my daughter and I find snuggling up under one very soothing and we've both had a very bad year, me nearly dying earlier in the year and my dad actually dying. My daught loves board games so that could be an option.

Gertibear · 14/10/2026 08:52

Lots of great suggestions. What about an afternoon tea for 2 voucher. She can either take you or a friend of her choice.

That sounds lovely! Current looking for a craft kit or something like that we can do in the comfort of our home. Doesn't haven't to be wreath making maybe something like tufting if possible or needle punching.

Anyone have a suggestions?

Just wondered if this might help- on Hobbycraft they often do make along (mal) or crochet along (cal) so you can work at you own pace but it’s structured, I think it’s great for anxiety as you aren’t forced to go somewhere that might make you feel anxious and you don’t lose progress if you are having a bad day. I’ve linked to an old advent cal which I did with one of my children and it really helped her https://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/ideas/knitcraft-christmas-advent-cal.html
we tried to do one every day, but there was no pressure and we both enjoyed it. There are a lot of domestika courses which are also for textiles and some have a lovely supportive community attached. Also fluffy blankets and the little book of hygge helped. Hope she feels better x

Hi! These are lovely but there unfortunately out of stock apart from size 14-16!

Other sizes now back in stock x

ImmortalNowBabyDoll · 15/10/2026 05:30

I love my heated throw (Costco) and I also have a electric hot water bottle which is a game changer for handling the cold! I fully recommend one, mine has a belt so you can wear it, very good for period pain.

If she's recently moved home it might be nice to make her room feel more "home"- nice new bedding, candles and home decor, perhaps a nice cosy armchair if there's space.
