11 Year old doing absolutely nothing!

I know its thatweird bit between Christmas & New year but my 11 year old has done absolutely nothing since Christmas Day but eat “ chill” and play on his new devices.

He is perfectly happy and has refused any offer to go out for walks or events and the lack of excercise and structure if making me feel anxious! More so as I'm not doing anything too ‘.

Im stuck between its a funny time and he and me also dont often get the chance to relax but I also feel a really bad mum for not making him do more!

What's everyone else been doing??

mine watched all of the despicable me films back to back yesterday, in his pants. We have spent time at my parents, but that was equally as chilled. The only "thing" we've done was a cinema trip this morning so even leaving the house hasn't meant being active.

We've been the same. It's the only school holiday we ever do this as I'm usually working, juggling childcare with random days off (and going out somewhere) and sending DD to camps. Christmas is the one school holiday we get to be lazy and spend the whole time together. It's midwinter and we need the rest; we also have colds.

I'm really not the sort to stay indoors - any other time I'd be climbing the walls, but between Christmas and New Year is the exception.

Just let him relax.
We've all forgotten how to do it

I think you should leave him in peace. It’s not good for people to be always bombarded with things they must be doing because the alternative might be your child turning into an overweight sloth with an aversion to daylight. There’s a happy medium between the two extremes and he’s sitting nicely in it.

10 and 12 here and most suggestions are met with distain and a ‘I just want to chill’. They did agree to swimming and going to a gymnastics session. But otherwise they would rather mooch jn pjs and any trips need them to be told not asked…

Some exercise is needed - a walk, swimming , whatever

nothing beyond that

CoodleMoodle · 30/12/2025 18:38

My eldest is 11 and we've done a lot of chilling! I aim to do one thing out of the house every afternoon (except Christmas and Boxing day), so after spending the morning lazing about nearly every day we've been to IKEA, the library, the trampoline park, the garden centre... We went swimming on Christmas Eve and we're going again tomorrow, but she LOVES swimming so she's happy. She also likes all of the other stuff we've done - it's the 7yo who's more difficult to convince sometimes.

There's also been Lego, crafting, gaming, TV, playing with her little brother, and a tiny bit of homework. All in all, it's been quite pleasant.

Let him enjoy it i’d say, while he has a chance.

From 15 i have spent xmas hols revising or working.

Pistolpunk · 30/12/2025 18:46

I'm on annual leave, teen and myself have been in the house pottering about, napping, seeing to the pets, eating, chilling, reading, gaming and netflix. I'm seeing it as a reset and relaxing after a busy period with work, school and him getting over illness. We will come out of hibernation around the 2nd january.
