What can I take to a beige buffet tomorrow?

It's round 2 of Christmas tomorrow, 3 hour drive to see family and it will be nice. There will be a buffet, it will be beige, I've been given the menu and asked to bring anything I think is missing.

We will happily eat what is there, I want to take some additions but no-one other than us eats non-beige foods so there's no point in taking a selection of salads.

They have sausage rolls, quiche, breaded chicken, garlic bread, pork pies, cheese and biscuits. Any thoughts on what I could add to that that people might actually like? Extra points for some fibre and vitamins. I'm also not sure I'll be allowed to use the oven!

Grapes and a chopped berry platter

OhMaria2 · 26/12/2025 11:43

Carrot sticks, pepper sticks, houmous and baby tomatoes. Coleslaw and things like mini mozzarella balls, pots of baby beetroot, tubs of artichokes or sundried tomatoes.

Personally my show stopper now is a loaf of sourdough.

Id just take some crisps and nibbles.

randomchap · 26/12/2025 11:44

Coleslaw? It's not salad exactly and is a good accompaniment to beige food?

Some pickles? Again a decent accompaniment and do contain some veg

Good pizza with peppers, onions, mushrooms etc on. Not pepperoni, there's more than enough processed pork already. Can be pre cooked and eaten cold if they won't let you heat it up, although if they have an air fryer, I'd be sticking slices of it in there.

Those with childish tastes can pick it off the veg if necessary.

Ah yes, watching my dad pick about 4 sunflower seeds off the top of a bin last time we visited was priceless.

Good ideas here, I have time to make a decent veggie pizza, coleslaw will probably get eaten by most and a jar of baby pickled onions should go down well. And grapes and berries should be deemed acceptable too.

I hope I don't sound ungrateful, we'll have a lovely time and no one will starve. I think it's good to inject a bit more variety in though, some might even enjoy it.

Mini fruit kebabs - healthy and colourful - like berries/ grapes/ melon/ pineapple. Veg sticks and a couple of dips/ salsa.

Chocolate log?

dudsville · 26/12/2025 12:45

My dearly departed ILs made a buffet not similar to this, withthe addition of lots of not such great quality sweets. They were such a lovely couple, and spending the holidays with them was a treat in itself. I ate meat then, and I've never had an appetite for poor quality sweets and puddings, so for me it was a bit of an atkins diet day.

OvernightBloats · 26/12/2025 12:48

Potato salad, pasta salad, rice salad.

feelingfree17 · 26/12/2025 12:48

Cherry tomatoes on the vine
Carrot and red/yellow pepper sticks/cucumber
A few dips

storminabuttercup · 26/12/2025 12:50

Loads of pickles to perk it up? And good coleslaw

bungobungobungo · 26/12/2025 13:03

Nice cheeses with baguettes and good butter, some chutneys and pickles would be my contribution.

LiveLuvLaugh · 26/12/2025 20:56

Grapes, celery, cucumber and carrott sticks, cherry tomatoes, beetroot, olives, pickled onions, hummus, dates, satsumas. I love dried apricots with cheese too.

Why is everyone suggesting vegetables when OP says no one but her will eat them?!

I hate a beige buffet. If you don’t think anything is missing then don’t take anything for the buffet? Obviously don’t show up empty handed but bring drinks, a plant, chocolates, a candle??

HouseAshamed · 26/12/2025 21:05

Mince pies, brandy butter and baklava.
I'd take a green salad, some dip type foods and/or pickles/antipasti

Right there in the OP 'Any thoughts on what I could add to that that people might actually like? Extra points for some fibre and vitamins' ie vegetables, which can be picked off or even eaten like a normal person. So the OP gets to eat something she enjoys as well as the beige crap.

Egglio · 26/12/2025 21:19

Make a quiche? Or sourdough pizza? Then you can make name one super beige version and one veggie version of each. So a quiche Lorraine, then a broccoli and tomato quiche, a meat feast style pizza (pigs in blankets one is always a hit for me) then a veggie supreme style one. Bonus is you can take home any leftovers.

I did a similar buffet today, but added a platter of fresh fruit and veg - strawberries, grapes, melon, pineapple, as well as cucumber and carrot sticks also sliced peppers.
