Food hits and misses?

How did you get on?

We had a slow cooked turkey joint and a gammon from Marks and Spencer. Both were good, the turkey particularly so although the gravy was a bit watery. We had a mix of party food from Tesco and Marks and Spencer for when friends came overs last night. Mostly good but some disappointments. We had some little beef Yorkshire puddings that were very dry and tasteless. They were from M&S. No complaints over the pigs n blankets and stuffing balls again from M&S but the cauliflower cheese from Tesco wasn’t good at all.

We also have a Yule log to be eaten today. We were just too full yesterday. Looking forward to that would some baileys cream and a coffee.

We had those M&S mini Yorkshire puddings OP and they were lovely and moist, I wonder if you got a batch that missed the sauce dispenser!

We had the M&S snowmen steamed buns, taste was nice but too much dough - sacrificed taste for appearance. They did look lovely though.

We also had the mini pies and the prawn selection, nothing special.

Tesco Finest raspberry roulade with additional pouring cream on Xmas eve was very nice.

Morrison The Best mini mince pies are great every year.

My mums Christmas cake was lovely.

Mostly home made here so not much to add but had some nice prawn lollipop things in a coconut and lime crust, and some chicken spring rolls. They'd been in the freezer and the packaging is on the recycling bin but I think they were from Asda.

Similar experience as others with Jamie's yorkshire puds - not nearly as nice as my usual. His roast potatoes are nice though, I have done them like that several times but always cook them longer than he suggests.

We had M&S party food on Christmas Eve and everyone loved the mini burgers, they were the first thing to go. For the main meal yesterday the homemade sausage meat stuffing was the most popular element - we have had shop bought before and it’s never as good. Definitely worth the effort of making my own. We had several desserts available and the most popular by far was the winter wonderland cheesecake from Lidl. The chocolate decorations on top made it a real centrepiece and although very heavy and rich, it was delicious.

Roast dinner, never again! There’s 5 of us and it’s so much work and faff.
4 of 5 of us would be happy with takeaway curry (many curry houses open Xmas day here in West Yorkshire) but MIL would struggle.
Next year I am either boarding a plane somewhere exotic or if I have to be at home it will be ready done Beef Wellington, ready done dauphinoise and microwave green veg

We had waitrose wagyu fillet steaks which were excellent on 23rd and waitrose porchetta on Christmas day which was fabulous - serves 10-12 so loads left over (only 5 of us) and half the price of a turkey.

we Had beef and chicken which was easy and Sainsbury’s pigs in blankets which were good. Have stollen and Yule log to try today but home made. I know the Yule log will be good but my first time making stollen so fingers crossed!

Unprecedentedusername · 26/12/2025 12:47

Had a very disappointing chocolate and raspberry roulade from Cook. Heavy texture and overly sweet. Not worth £16.

Booksandwine80 · 26/12/2025 12:50

M&S pork and cranberry stuffing was delicious. Even better as cold leftovers 😛

CharlotteCChapel · 26/12/2025 14:19

We had steak with peppercorn sauce, red cabbage and cauliflower and broccoli cheese. The vegetables were the best I've ever made and the steak was very tasty .

I usually make a nut roast/ veg main in pastry, but ran out of time this year. Asda vegan 'turkey roast' was surprisingly nice, Sainsbury's nut roast less so: strange stringy green bits and strong tomatoey taste. My husband really liked the Aldi Baileys yule log, for me it was too synthetic. Asda pigs in blankets were very greasy, I've bought a pack of their 'exceptional' range ones for today, will see if they're better.

@Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair I used Jamie Oliver’s Yorkshire pudding recipe too this year and mine didn’t work out either. Sticking to my usual one from now on.

I was feeling so positive about it I even sat down by the oven obsessed for it to work as we didn't have cake tins here.
I was on a video call with my parents last night and my step-dad had tried the recipe and it didn't work for him. Maybe Jamie has an extra special oven eh?

I Wonder how the £195 beef wellington was, if anyone had one

There is a few reviews on Instagram re: Wellington and it's not good! For that amount I'd take the risk and attempt my own.

M&S best ever Yule log - oh my days absolutely beautiful!!!!!!

I was gifted this at work, im not usually a fan of yule log but this was absolutely delicious. Im looking forward to more tonight!

I have just had the baileys cream. It’s awful. I’ll leave it for DH as he may have a bit in his coffee. It it tastes very artificial and overpowering. The chocolate Yule log is lovely though.

I bought the Bailey’s Carte d’Or ice cream from Tesco based on a recommendation /mention on another thread. Never again. It also tasted and smelled way too much like alcohol. As in, pure ethyl or something. It was probably similar to your experience with the Bailey’s whipped cream. I think we could’ve honestly set the ice cream on fire with a lighter 😂

Mosaic80 · 26/12/2025 19:11

We had a Tesco beef joint which was lovely but we overdid it a little. My brother made florentines which we had with haagen dazs vanilla ice cream tonight which was delicious.

Had a glittery tiramisu from Aldi and a raspberry panna cotta from Sainsburys, both were absolutely delicious 👌🏻
The lobster and king prawn shell starter thingy from Sainsburys was crap though!

You just reminded me @OnlyYellowRoses — the tiramisu we got from M & S was excellent. It’s their regular tray of tiramisu for only £4. We two scoffed at their “serves 6” label! 😂 I love tiramisu and have eaten loads of versions in multiple countries and cities. M & S’ tray version is top notch.

Miss/Meh: the scallops with herb butter from Aldi. The scallops themselves were good but it all felt bland. They weren’t worth the £7.99 for 6 scallops. We’ll buy natural scallops next time and cook them the way we prefer.

I bought a porchetta from Aldi for £14.99 and I’m still yet to cook it. Maybe I’ll cook it next week and report back.

Summergarden · 26/12/2025 20:04

A guest brought a chocolate gateau from Iceland. I’m not always that bothered by them but my days, this one was so delicious. It didn’t have much of the usual chocolate mouse and instead had a sort of glazed chocolate finish… wish there was some leftover for today and am tempted to buy one for new Years!

Mangomintmama · 26/12/2025 20:15

New York Vanilla cheesecake from M&S was our highlight! So good!!
