Fairytale of New York?

I don't seem to have heard this song anywhere this year, or is is just me? Admittedly I haven't been out and about that much, but I'm just wondering if it's maybe having a dip in popularity.

I listen to a lot of German Christmas radio and also some from Eastern Europe e.g. Poland, and on the stations that play English-language songs FONY never features - maybe it doesn't fit in with a more classic Christmas sensibility, iyswim?

I know a lot of people can't stand this song, but I've always had a soft spot for it. Shane MacGowan was born on Christmas Day, of course - RIP.

It makes sense considering how the word has largely changed from meaning a general loser to what it generally does these days (well, except for in the West Midlands, where it's a legitimate word in daily use to refer to a popular meat product)...

However, I find it very sad that calling a woman 'an old slut' is somehow considered inoffensive, totally fine and unworthy of any comment whatsoever.

"They’ve changed “you cheap lousy faggot” to “you’re cheap and you’re haggard” 🙄"

"Luckily we have the original version on our Christmas Hits CD so faggot gets an airing."

"Sadly it’s a rare brave radio station that plays the original version these days."

3 on the first page.

None of those are inherently homophobic. People stating they prefer the original doesn’t make them homophobic. It just means they prefer the original.
I’m one of them. I’d prefer to have the original and stimulate a conversation with my kids about language evolution and changing attitudes then change it and gloss over history. Same with Michael Jackson songs. Same with controversial historical figures when the idiots were tearing down their statues...

Not sure I agree that art should be edited to conform to the values of the era in which it’s received 🤷🏻‍♀️ I certainly have no interest in edited editions of Roald Dahl or Enid Blyton.

However, if the edit was made by the band members themselves rather than being imposed on them, that’s different.

I've asked MHHQ if they'll consider taking this thread down as I really didn't want it to turn into yet another bunfight. Some interesting responses, thank you.

Happy Christmas to all.

I've heard it plenty. And the lyric change seems like a good solution to enable it to still be played. Win win!

MyspecialMug · 24/12/2025 18:08

I heard a lot of, 'step into christmas', not much Mariah this year, so happy about that.
Felt sorry for shop workers having to listen to xmas sing's on loop.
I do love Fairytale of NY.
Happy Christmas everyone.

OnlyLittleOldMe · 24/12/2025 18:26

Its been on Heart Xmas and Magic Xmas a lot in its political correct form. On Boom Radio in its original form, so I've been told but haven't heard it there myself.

Kirsty MacColl started singing that change in lyric around 1991. And a lot of the remaining members of the band prefer that lyric to be used.

You will have to go somewhere else for your seasonal homophobic slur.

It's not a homaphobic slur over here. It's an Irish term for a bundle of sticks or slang for a lay ne'er do well.

I love Fairytale of New York! I listened to Galway Bay out of curiosity the other day though and thought it was awful.
Not sure why everyone is so offended by faggot but queer is fine now. Who on earth gets to decide these things?

OnlyHereForTheChristmasBoard · 24/12/2025 21:05

Since thread is still up...

@cantbearsed247 - The Rare Old Mountain Dew (mentioned in first verse) is a fun song, The Pogues did a version of it.

And yeah, a song which includes a section where a couple get drunk and hurl insults at each other may contain words which are, um, insulting Grin

On the whole it's the group of people the word refers to. And they don't all love the word "queer" so best to avoid that one too.

Kickinthenostalgia · 24/12/2025 23:00

heard it in smooth, more radio and magic… sounds like neither have edited it thank god… nothing worse with this generation, cancelling things that were a product of its era.
