Last minute stocking fillers to keep 8-10yos entertained on Xmas morning

We’re staying with family and have just realised they normally do present opening late in the day (but stockings first thing).

I’m looking at add a stocking filler type present or two that will keep the DSs (8 and 10) entertained in the morning (esp without too much adult involvement).

Something with a bit of novelty value ideally - they can occupy themselves reading and drawing normally but I’m not sure that will cut the mustard on Xmas morning!

I can get to Argos, high St shops etc today.

Any ideas?

Things like little puzzle cubes/toys, puzzle books, trivia or quiz books. Simple card games like top trumps. Or small building kits to assemble a toy. Magic trick kits.

Small Lego sets - mine would have liked Minecraft themed at that age, or the Brikheadz ones.

Origami kit - or we once had a book of paper birds to fold and fly.

Those kits where you mine for gems/break open geodes.

Sticker book where you create scenes

Bunny vs Monkey graphic novels with a blank comic writing book

Rubix cube?

SoManyDandelions · 23/12/2025 15:18

Or you can get games like Genius Star/Gravity Maze which they cam play together or solo

Lego sets, wheres wally books (or similar). Puzzle books or wordsearch? Magna blocks sets?

Silverbirchleaf · 23/12/2025 15:24

‘Where’s wally?’ type book

Football (or other) annual

small Lego set

Snap!

Thank you for the suggestions! I’ve got them a small Lego set and a graphic novel/comic each which should keep them going for a bit.

They have something like this amongst their main presents otherwise this is a great suggestion (and it’s from another family member so I can’t just switch it to a stocking present)

Uno flip/ exploding kittens?

shellyleppard · 23/12/2025 15:49

@FishfingerFlinger what about a pack of playing cards?? Can play snap or build with them 😉

awrbc81 · 23/12/2025 15:50

Do you have Uno? My DDs love playing that at the moment, also a new set of top trumps cards each?

Notmyreality · 23/12/2025 15:51

Another vote for small lego

FishfingerFlinger · 23/12/2025 16:15

We have so many top trumps, uno, and other card games already! And while they will play with them esp if an adult encourages them, they’re so every day that I don’t think they’re interesting enough to stave off the inevitable nagging to open their main presents!

Some good ideas in here but are you really going to make them wait all day for their presents?

We used to as kids. Stocking presents in morning. Then dm did meal preparation and then we ate lunch. Often by then it was 3pm so Queens speech time. Then we got to open presents.

NerrSnerr · 23/12/2025 17:44

Mine at that age would have liked smaller Lego sets, joke and fact books, UNO (or one of it’s spin offs) and Top Trumps. Some kind of craft?

It seems mean to me! But we never had stockings as kids so if I’d been made to wait until the afternoon for any presents I wouldn’t have been impressed!
