Anyone else going to church for Christmas?

Our youngest is still too young for midnight mass so we are going to a family friendly carol service tomorrow at 19.00 which I hope will become a regular family tradition.

Is anyone else headed to church over the festive period?

I'm going to midnight mass with DH, DD (home from Uni), DS and his girlfriend. They are all coming with me because they know it's something I've wanted to do for years.
I have a life limiting condition, which is probably why they've all offered to come with me. None of us attend church, it's simply something I feel a pull to attend.

We are going 5 30pm christmas eve. There's no midnight mass round here, it's 5.30pm or 9pm.

I’m extremely lucky to be part of a church community and have been (as well as Sunday morning services) to advent and carol services. I have done alpha course and a year in church community including reading and leading intercession. It is joyful and inspiring. In particular, it helps mark and celebrate the year: lent, Easter, harvest, remembrance and Christmas. I’ll be going to crib service and midnight service on Xmas eve . I’ve never been to midnight mass before. I go alone because my husband and son don’t want to but I am always welcomed and don’t feel alone. There are compelling reasons NOT to believe and you have to make a decision TO believe. I had a very, very clear sign from God many years ago but denied it, it’s taken me a lifetime to get to this stage. I fully expect snide comments about believing in sky fairies but that’s fine. In short, go for it OP , it will enhance Christmas and your whole year.

Yes, we go to 10pm Christmas Eve Mass (Catholic) as no Midnight Mass here. It is part of Christmas for us and yes I try and attend each week.

We go to the Nativity Service on xmas eve. I usually go to the midnight service but I might give it a miss this year just because we have a toddler now and I dont want to be tired. We go for morning service on Christmas day which is such fun. All the kids bring a present in to show the congregation from Santa. Its lovely. Going to church is important to my family, we have gained so much from what has become our church family. Wonderfully kind people. The christmas services are very special. Merry Christmas

We go every year. It’s a tradition for us and helps the kids understand it’s not all about the gifts !

Yes, of course.

GrumpySparkler · 23/12/2025 09:27

We're going to the local crib service tomorrow afternoon. We're not religious, although children go to CofE schools, as did I. I enjoy it, bloody love a sing song, but like pp want to remind the kids it's not all about the presents!

Some lovely traditions here ❤️

Yes we have a Christingle service in the afternoon, will see how it goes with a toddler. It is very lovely though, especially as it gets darker and the church is lit up with all of the Christingle candles.

Crackersnap · 23/12/2025 11:39

Yes myself and my children go on Christmas eve to an evening service and then we go on Christmas morning to the Christmas day service. We always have a lovely time there. It's a lovely way to start Christmas morning with our church family ❤️

Hoolahoophop · 23/12/2025 11:49

We went to Christingle at my childhood village church (CofE) which was lovely, did a nativity carol service with the kids school (Catholic) and will go Christmas Eve to the fun family candle lit carol service at 5pm in our now local church (CofE). I am not actually very religious but I love these services as they bring our community together and I always see lots of people I know, catch up and it feels warm and fuzzy and joyful and far from commercial.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/12/2025 11:52

Been to 4 Carol services already, 3 more to go! And I’m running the service on Christmas Day.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/12/2025 11:56

First Vespers at 3 then midnight mass. Cant do Christmas Day as working.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 23/12/2025 11:57

Yes, but I go alternate Sunday's, plus Thursdays anyway. I went Carol singing around the parish last week, and to the carols by candlelight service Sun eve.
Ill be at midnight mass and the 10.30 service on Christmas day.

Church is a huge part of my life!

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 23/12/2025 16:54

Yes, we will do the early Xmas eve service. Nothing beats a good singalong to get into the spirit!

Flowerslamp · 23/12/2025 17:14

I've been to two Nine Lessons and Carols services and will go to midnight mass. DP sings in one of the choirs and I love to hear them.

Flowerslamp · 23/12/2025 17:15

I often wonder how church people feel about it being treated as an "attraction" at Christmas. Are they glad of the extra people or is it all a bit annoying?

awrbc81 · 23/12/2025 17:20

Probably, I’m not religious but was raised CofE and went to church regularly, so I do try and go at Christmas as it’s traditional.
We usually go to the 4pm crib service at the village church

Natsku · 23/12/2025 17:27

I probably will, because DD needs to go to church a certain number of times for her confirmation school requirements and so far she has been once, and forgot to get her book signed so not sure it counts anyway, and if she takes someone with her it counts double.

tonyhawks23 · 23/12/2025 17:29

We're going nine lessons tonight.

RaraRachael · 23/12/2025 17:32

Our church doesn't do any special Christmas services so Sunday was the last time I've been before Christmas.

MumChp · 23/12/2025 17:33

No we attend the rest of the year.

AyrshireTryer · 23/12/2025 17:35

Christmas is getting far too religious.

I think this is so important.

I usually go to Midnight Mass but this year will be away from home. Our local church had a beautiful Christmas Tree fayre this year, though that we popped in to.
