Buying lots of presents for adults, rainbow Christmas lights, tacky ridiculous tree ornaments (this year I have added a festive sushi and a festive pickle to my collection), tinsel, drinking and eating to ludicrous excess, not giving a shit if people rock up uninvited over the festive period (I even let them in and feed them)

I bloody love Christmas!

I have bought my 20 year old a new tree ornament every year since he was born. This yeae I triumphed with a Pot Noodle one as he loves them!

I think it’s the words not the actual act of eating leftovers / odds and sods.

There is nothing wrong with the words, describes it perfectly. Plus many on MN really like the idea of picky bits.

Hosting. A lot. This year 14 people and honestly the females do most of the work and make the magic. I am the commanding officer and I do boss the men around.

I set a fabulous table serve all homemade
food ( not all by me) drinks and dessert.

I add random people who may be not included elsewhere altho they typically are connected to me…this year my cousins SIL new boyfriend and my cousin (on the other side of the family) who was unexpectedly widowed last December and is still very much grieving and experiencing “firsts without her DH”. She may not come but the door is open and a place at my table available irregardless of when or if she rsvp or arrives.

Expensive gifts for my dc. Multiple new items for me because the stores are lush this time of year with things I like when often I am…meh..while shopping.

CHRISTMAS CARDS! I laugh my arse off at how some people get so annoyed and wound up when people <<GASP>> send a Christmas card to them, because it's SUCH AN INCONVENIENCE, and sooooo naff and outdated! (In their opinion!) 🙄 It stresses them out so much that they have to cut it up into a dozen pieces and throw it on the fire, or in the bin. Then they need a sleep to recover from the stress!

Said disgusting and offensive Christmas cards shall NOT be put up for display, AND WILL BE DESTROYED AND BINNED IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!! Some say they 'clutter the place.' LOL no they don't. Just hang a piece of string up and hang them on there. We do - every year (2 pieces actually) and have about 40 now on the 2 pieces of string we have up... Looks glorious Grin

Give it a go you miserable feckers! 😆

RyanFudgingMurphy · 22/12/2025 19:21

Tinsel, and decorating my pkace like the 90s threw up. More is more! Coloured lights. No colour co-ordination. Doing what makes you happy.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 22/12/2025 19:23

Christmas cards, Christmas music in shops (and this hotel restaurant I'm currently sitting in), decorations, fairy lights, presents, wrapping presents, the food, the tree 🎄 Love It All 😁

GKG1 · 22/12/2025 19:27

Haha nice op, I wondered whether to start a thread entitled ‘I think it’s really time to properly have it out about ‘picky bits’ 😆

It feels to me like a social contagion in the school playground thing. There’s no way there are so many women IRL who of their own volition got so worked up about this phrase, without it being suggested to them on MN. See also ‘moist’ and I can’t remember what else.

I’m trying to think of anything I feel similarly irritated by - maybe draw instead of drawer, but that’s about draw meaning to make marks on paper and drawer being a thing you put knickers in. I feel that is deserving of condemnation way more than picky bits because it’s just the wrong word for a thing. Picky bits surely can’t be really that annoying.

EchoedSilence · 22/12/2025 19:42

Fairy lights of all colours
Candles
Big piles of presents
Boots shower gel gift sets
Tinsel
Picky bits
Tubs of quality street and Roses
Outside decorations, the more colourful and garish the better
Proper coloured wrapping paper
Cheese
Booze
Christmas specials on the telly
Christmas throws, PJs and cushions

Gliblet · 22/12/2025 19:44

Christmas cards, Christmas music, tinsel, Christmas pudding, stocking filler tat, outdoor lights, trifle with jelly in it, enjoying the mess and chaos for a few days instead of obsessively blitzing the house back to sterile minimalism on boxing day.

Christmas markets, especially big European ones. Vienna and Prague are my favourites.

setadriftonmemorybliss · 22/12/2025 19:54

The trees and Christmas lights, everything is so crappy and dark in Jan once they all come down

I actually quite like the space when it all comes down, and sometimes treat myself to some coloured lights or fairy lights for a specific corner or bit of furniture to keep the brightness without all the Christmassyness

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/12/2025 20:09

I like those giant inflatable Father Christmases and snowmen that people put in their front gardens. Especially if the weather is awful and they are out there grinning inanely in downpours and gales.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/12/2025 20:11

Round robins, they are the best entertainment. The boastier the better for maximum comic effect .

FurForksSake · 22/12/2025 20:12

Calling the big man Santa.
scented candles
yorkshire pudding and cauliflower cheese with my turkey
sending Christmas cards
buying a couple of new decorations every year
trifle
being a greedy gobbler for the day.

A few years back someone's massive (a good 10ft tall) inflatable Homer Simpson in a Santa suit broke its tether rope in a storm and bounced off down the road. It literally escaped and terrorised the village 😁

bettyboo9 · 22/12/2025 20:30

It’s an open top bus, completely lit up with Santa, the elves and full Christmas tunes. It goes up and down the main roads of Sussex and has sea cadets and others walking behind collecting money for charities. My daughter was part of it this year, I was more excited than her.

MerryAndBrightLaLaLa · 22/12/2025 20:39

Sparkly nails!!! 💅🏼 ✨✨✨

That sounds most excellent 🎄
Where my mum lives they have one of those tractor runs where local trackers are decorated up and they drive a massive circular route raising money for the local hospice.
